[Solved] Desktop integration problem in Ubuntu 10.04

Postby lesliek19 » Wed Nov 16, 2011 4:54 pm

I use Ubuntu 10.04LTS.

I decided to update my Openoffice to the latest version.

I followed instructions first set out in this forum and then transferred to OpenOffice's documentation.

However, I struck a problem at the last stage. Here is the output i got:

leslie@ubuntu:~/Desktop/OOO330_m20_native_packed-1_en-GB.9567/DEBS/desktop-integration$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb
Selecting previously deselected package openoffice.org-debian-menus.
dpkg: regarding openoffice.org3.3-debian-menus_3.3-9556_all.deb containing openoffice.org-debian-menus:
openoffice.org-common conflicts with openoffice.org-debian-menus
openoffice.org-debian-menus (version 3.3-9556) is to be installed.
dpkg: error processing openoffice.org3.3-debian-menus_3.3-9556_all.deb (--install):
conflicting packages - not installing openoffice.org-debian-menus
Errors were encountered while processing:
openoffice.org3.3-debian-menus_3.3-9556_all.deb

Now, I have no entries for OpenOffice under Applications and when I double-click on a word processing document I've created, I'm told that there's no application associated with such files.

What to do?

Leslie

Had you removed all the packages that had been installed before (the version delivered with Ubuntu)?
Make sure that there is no OOo package with the "ubuntu" string in the version number in Synpatic.
AOO 4.1.7 on Xubuntu 20.04 and 4.1.5 on Windows 10 (with winPenPack port).

Thanks for your quick reply, Hagar Delest.

The instructions called "Installing on Debian based Distros", which I followed, said that it was sufficient in Ubuntu merely to run "sudo apt-get remove openoffice.org-core" before installing.

Turns out it wasn't.

I also had to remove openoffice.org-common via the Synaptic package manager.

After I did that, "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" ran properly.

Maybe it would help others if the instructions for Ubuntu were amended. I'd do it myself, but the page doesn't seem like a Wikipedia page that anyone can amend.

Thanks again,

Leslie

It may have been added afterward. It's not in my version: [Ubuntu] Installing OOo on Debian and Co.
