Searchmonkey and odt files

I have downloaded and have begun using Searchmonkey in ubuntu 10.04 to locate text within several dozen odt files. I can locate words and phrases within txt files but not odt files and was wondering if anyone has this same experience. Searchmonkey is a grep gui program. Of course, one might load each file individually (as a work around) and search each file with the search feature of writer. In advance, I thank you for a response.

Under Windows Copernicus is said to work. Under Ubuntu you would need some utility which can search a .zip archive, as all OOo files are renamed .zip archives; if you find one such, you might need to tell it that the od? files should be searched. I don't know about searchmonkey.

Under Ubuntu I use Recoll, (and recollindex triggered as a cron job to keep the index up to date). It can open zips and other archives and indexes .odt, Thunderbird email, mp3 tags, picture tags, etc. etc. I didn't need to do anything special to make it work with my old OOo and new LibO files.

It is helpful to know a utility that works. When my memory starts to fail me, I'll use it, if I can remember its name :-)

Recoll has worked brilliantly for me so far.

google desktop, under Kubuntu was my favourite for this but as of 11.04 (or maybe it was 10.11) I started to have problems of the indexing locking up my system at times. Prior to this it was really good and coped well with ODT. I have not revisited for some time so don't know if this has improved and I have not used it in Ubuntu for a very long time (but worked a treat when I did). In Kubuntu nepomuk and strigi, in combination also find stuff in ODT (currently nepomuk seems rather unstable though)

AFAIK Google are stopping support of their desktop search engines.

From Wikipedia: "In September 2011, Google announced it would discontinue a number of its products, including Google Desktop".
