[Solved] Cannot install 3.3 in Ubuntu
I can't install Open Office version 3.3 in Ubuntu. I have tried accessing from different browsers with equally unsuccessful results. I seem to be able to download a packet to my desktop but from there I can't understand what to do.
I've already tried to get help on the Ubuntu Community Forum but the suggestions don't seem to solve the issues. Here's a thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1680079
Please can someone help?
PS. The reason I am trying to install version 3.3 is that I had problems with spell check in 3.2.

Re: Cannot install 3.3 in Ubuntu
Follow the tutorial at
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/ ... ?f=74&t=68
Firstly use Synaptic in Ubuntu to uninstall the Ubuntu OpenOffice; If this is not uninstalled the version from http://www.openoffice.org will not install and you have to redo removal via Synaptic.
Double click on the downloaded file, which should open in Archive Manager. Extract the files, which usually end up in a directory called something like
OOO330_m18_native_packed-1_en-GB.9556. (Differs depending on exact version of OOo).
Using a Terminal, make your way into that directory and then _follow the tutorial_.
It works.

Edit: You might just try
Code: Select all

Re: Cannot install 3.3 in Ubuntu
Thanks for your help. I followed your suggestions, and tried to follow the tutorial closely. I was able to get to step #4:
4. Install the created .debs
CODE: SELECT ALL EXPAND VIEW
cd OOo_inst_folder/DEBS
sudo dpkg -i *.deb.
However I end up with this result:
{{[see attached screenshot]}}
rob@rob-laptop:~$ cd OOo_inst_folder/DEBS
bash: cd: OOo_inst_folder/DEBS: No such file or directory
rob@rob-laptop:~$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb
[sudo] password for rob:
dpkg: error processing *.deb (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
Errors were encountered while processing:
*.deb
rob@rob-laptop:~$ ^C
rob@rob-laptop:~$
What is going on here? Thanks

Re: Cannot install 3.3 in Ubuntu
OOo_inst_folder is a placeholder name for the actual folder into which the OOo installer unpacks the files.
In the case of my install on Ubuntu 10.10 of OOo 3.3 RC10 going with the defaults the install directory lives in Downloads and is called
OOO330_m20_native_packed-1_en-GB.9567
OpenFind a terminal (Applications / Accessories / Terminal)
and (in my case - adjust for yours)

cd DEBS
sudo dpkg -i *.deb.
cd desktop-integration

and all should be well

Re: Cannot install 3.3 in Ubuntu
Thanks RoryOF. Your advice was very valuable.
FYI I tried various different commands but finally I tried this:
xxx:~/Downloads$ cd OOO330_m20_native_packed-1_en-US.9567/DEBS
xxx:~/Downloads/OOO330_m20_native_packed-1_en-US.9567/DEBS$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb
and it worked! Now the 3.3 version seems to have finally, successfully downloaded! Thanks again.

Re: [Solved] Cannot install 3.3 in Ubuntu
This tutorial worked like a charm.
At first, I was a bit apprehensive about uninstalling the previous version that came with Ubuntu (3.2.1). But doing so with Synaptic was surprisingly easy: just had to select the main package openoffice.org-core (identified with version number 1:3.2.1-7ubuntu) and set it to Removal, then Apply.
Afterwards, running the following command on the terminal took care of the remaining packages
Finally, the steps of the tutorial at
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/ ... ?f=74&t=68
were a breeze!
Didn't even have to reset the user profile. All is working fine, even the desktop integration ("Application" menu and context right menus).
Thank you so much for the help!

Re: [Solved] Cannot install 3.3 in Ubuntu
Hey Guys,
I'm having a small issue
When I extract the OpenOffice download there is no DEBS folder, so when I am trying to follow the tutorial on how to install it I run into a problem. Am I downloading the wrong version or something?
I am downloading this file OOo_3.3.0_Linux_x86_install-rpm-wJRE_en-US.tar.gz
I unpack it but there is no /DEBS folder that the installation tutorial says I should cd
Help please

You are downloading the rpm versions, the files are in the rpm folder. You would use alien to install rpms. For Ubuntu you should download the following:
OOo_3.3.0_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz
