[Solved] Searching multiple documents

Post by Edweirdo »

I have a number of directories full of documents that I want to be able to search. Obviously, grep doesn't work. I was wondering if there was a way to do this inside OOo or some other method.

Thanks,

I guess you're running Linux (please read the Survival Guide for the forum).

I move your thread in the Linux section, it's more a system wide issue (and about desktop searching/indexing tools) than specific to Writer.

You might want to give this a look: O3Spaces Workplace.
The O3Spaces Workplace is a web2.0 OpenOffice.org collaboration and document management extension. ...
O3Spaces Workplace lets you create, publish, version and search ODF documents from your OpenOffice.org suite.
I've not used it myself, but it looks like it would do what you want.

I didn't notice if it works on Linux or not.

My KDE (3.5.0) konqueror file search has no problem finding a search text inside ODT or ODS files....

My personal favorite is Docco (http://tockit.sourceforge.net/docco/). For more info see: http://www.linux.com/feature/54419

The KDE search works great. I didn't even realize that would work. I guess I am remembering back to some ancient version of Word Perfect that had it's own built in search all files thingy. I didn't think of a OS based search. Thanks to everybody.

Konqueror is part of the KDE window manager, which is only available in an experimental version for Windows - see https://www.kde.org/download/

There isn't a download button on the link I posted. If you look in the Windows section you will see a link in the line
An installer for KDE applications on Windows is available on windows.kde.org.

Just a thought - if you are not aware of what a window manager such as KDE is, you may be letting yourself in for an interesting time. :D

If you're using Windows 7, why not just use Windows Search?

Bill. I had been cos I had to since Oo more often than not could not find anything. But I went ahead and googled your thot and viola, HTG had a very instructive post on the subject. https://www.howtogeek.com/73065/learn-t ... windows-7/. Its worth a careful look see.

RoryOf. re: Copernic. I'd still be interested in knowing of a search that worked closer aligned to Oo.

Robeyd: thanks for the efforts and help! ...Interesting time. Its already quite an interesting time fro one doc to another. Sooo nothing to loose it seems.

There is also Docfetcher (multi-platform). I use it on my Windows 7 machine daily.

SOLVED

Post by JamesEJ »

Hager: Given you said U used it, I installed. Gonna take a bit of tome to index tho. bit will drudge thru it all.

Also, the HTG article works fine in the Oo standard search. I had to make my my "open with" default choice the Oo option so it would not open in the default win7 Wordpad. see: https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1 ... ogram.html

have fun guys,marking solved

Install Tracker.

It's a desktop search tool just for Linux.
