[Ubuntu] OOo Freeze at Splash Screen

Post by goggle5 »

Running Ubuntu 7.10 GG ... when trying to start Open Office 2.3, the splash screen pulls up and it freezes there.
This happens with all programs within the suite - tried uninstalling via Synaptic and re-installing but to no avail.

I am a new linux user - so any help with this would be appreciated.

If you have another theme than Human, try to get back to this default theme. Big bug from the Gutsy release.

Thanks to add '[Solved]' in your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

NB: I've moved your thread in the Linux section.

Thanks for the info ...

I am/was running the Human theme and the problem is still occurring. I have just upgraded
to the GG release, but this was happening in FF as well.

Is there some other issue or fix for this???

-thanks

Try to delete your OOo user profile : ~/.openoffice.org2 (it's a hidden folder). Launch again OOo, a new profile will be created.

You can try to remove the openoffice.org-gtk package perhaps. If you run OOo from the terminal, do you have an error message ?

The problem isn't related to the Ubuntu distribution; I've the the same issue an a Gentoo distribution and surfing on the net I've hit it in relation of Mandriva and Debian... the computer architecture seems to be uninportant too, the issue was found on x86 and PPC... also the problem show itself either on binary and compiled package... the only common thing seems to be the 2.3 version of OpenOffice...

I can give you more detail on the problem:

1) The binary that hangs is the oosplash.bin...

2) The splash screen hangs only if launched by an normal user, with the root user it works properly...

3) I've tried to debug it using strace:

Code: Select all

uname({sys="Linux", node="protozagro", ...}) = 0
connect(5, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path="/tmp/.X11-unix/X0"}, 19) = 0
uname({sys="Linux", node="protozagro", ...}) = 0

4) Deleting the ~/.ooo-2.0 don't resolve the issue...

5) Recompiling the entire OperOffice package don't resolve the issue...

6) The issue is easily reproducible, the splash screen always hangs...

7) It is not a problem linked with cups, the printer daemon works fine and it is properly reachable...

8) On Gentoo I use the following USE variables:

Code: Select all

[ebuild R ] app-office/openoffice-2.3.0 USE="cairo cups dbus eds gstreamer gtk java kde pam seamonkey sound -binfilter -debug -firefox -gnome -ldap -mono -odk -webdav -xulrunner" LINGUAS="en en_GB it -af -ar -as_IN -be_BY -bg -bn -br -bs -ca -cs -cy -da -de -dz -el -en_US -en_ZA -eo -es -et -fa -fi -fr -ga -gl -gu_IN -he -hi_IN -hr -hu -ja -km -ko -ku -lt -lv -mk -ml_IN -mr_IN -nb -ne -nl -nn -nr -ns -or_IN -pa_IN -pl -pt -pt_BR -ru -rw -sh_YU -sk -sl -sr_CS -ss -st -sv -sw_TZ -ta_IN -te_IN -tg -th -ti_ER -tn -tr -ts -uk -ur_IN -ve -vi -xh -zh_CN -zh_TW -zu" 0 kB
I don't have any other clue, if someone have some idea is very welcome...

Then, how do you explain it works fine on my Dapper with OOo 2.3 (as it does for many other users) ?

It clearly shows that this is a bug linked to the Gutsy upgrade.

You could try to install the official version of OOo : [Ubuntu] Installing OOo on Debian and Co.

I haven't said that the issue present itself in all the 2.3 installations on the whole planet, I've simply said that the the only common thing in all the discussion on this issue that I've found on the net seems to be the version of OO, 2.3...

Clearly the issue is NOT a bug linked to the Gutsy upgrade cause I used the tarball from the official version of OO and I've got the problem...

But how do you explain that even FF is impacted ? The root cause may be deep inside the system, so even the official release can have problems if the issue is in the layer of software between the application and the kernel.

I don't explain it (else I wouldn't wrote my post in this topic, I had only to give the solution ;) ) and I'm sure that the problem is in the layer below the application and not in the opplication itself... but the fact that many OO users got the problem remains and I'm searching some similarity in the various environments to discover the cause of the issue and try to solve it... the purpose of this forum is not exactly this?

I have exactly the same problem but on OpenSUSE 10.3: I can only start OOo as root. While starting as user the OOo freezes. Are there already solutions for this issue?

Back from some days of vacation.

zagroMod, have you tried to run OOo as root ? (sudo soffice IIRC). If still no OOo, I'll split the topic because lyoncha may experience another issue (Please read the Survival Guide for the forum for next threads).

Were you previously running Feisty ? What I understand from the thread is that it was fine before you upgraded, right ?

Of course we're here to find any root cause that could damage the OOo use. But sometimes, the issue is to be found in the OS. I think I remember such similar issue. Have you tried to create another account under Ubuntu and to run OOo from that new user ?

Yes, he has tried

I already have a solution for my issue. The problem is that my /home/ directory is mounted over NFS. So I had to comment out

Code: Select all

SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING=1
export SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING
in /usr/lib/ooo-xx/program/soffice. Now it works!

zagroMod, look in your /tmp folder and remove any OSL_PIPE... file you find.
Does it help ?

Ok, tried some ideas from yours replies...

I've tryed to create a basic user within no group than users itself... no way, the problem remains...

My home directory is on a LVM managed reiserfs partition, so the file locking isn't an apparent cause... but I've tryied anyway (in gentoo distro the file is /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice) but, obviously, with no result...

I've tried to empty completely the /tmp directory... again with no result...

I'm wondering if give some head bang on my walls could help someway... :P
