[Solved] Unable to make Writer executable, file not writable

Post by ARC13 »

Total Noob

On Kubuntu 20.04, OpenOffice 4.1.8.

Uninstalled, I think, LibreOffice.

Installed, OpenOffice. Office components displayed; however, when I try to open any I get...

1, a warning message asking if I trust the application (click Continue)

2. get the message, "Unable to make the service OpenOffice 4.1.8 Writer executable, aborting execution. Existing file /usr/share/applications/openoffice4-writer.desktop is not writable."

I have no idea what to do.

IMHO, there is no need to replace LibreOffice with OpenOffice, particularly when you are unfamiliar with your operating system.

How to install OpenOffice properly:

Better idea: Install OpenOffice as parallel, so there remains at least (!) one working text processing programme on your machine.

Verify that you have write access to the folder in which you are trying to Save the file; you should always have write access to your desktop (to check if access is the problem).

There is no reason this .desktop should be writable in /usr.

Have you followed the tutorial? See: [Tutorial] Installing Apache OpenOffice on GNU/Linux.

Or run sudo openoffice4 in a terminal and try a short test file.

I tried LibreOffice for a couple of weeks and did not like it at all. Thus, the install of OpenOffice.

I'll review you reference and see what I need to do.

Thank you

Whatever that means, it is the kind of software that OO could be if it had been maintained and tested during the past decade. The bug linked by Bill indicates that not a single person tested the release candidate of OO 4.1.8 on Ubuntu. The complete lack of development resources is the reason why all Linux distributions include LibreOffice instead of OpenOffice.
OO is a zombie. Sooner or later it will decease.
