[Solved] Installing OpenOffice

Post by jgpaton »

In Windows Explorer, I located the download of OO 4.1.6 and double-clicked it. No Welcome window appeared, rather what appeared was a window headed "Files Manager for Windows 1) and offering a long URL, which I am not able to select and copy. It begins
C:\Users\jgpat\AppData\Local\Packages\LLCSKYSPARKCORP.FilesManager2016_skhnmy5zxvp8\TempState
et cetera.
What can I do?

First check the filename of the OO 4.1.6 download. Is it of type .exe?

I think you right click on the folder and select "View file extensions". However, I am not a current Windows version user so don't know exactly what is the procedure.

thanx again. (I was off for a couple of hours to see a doctor.) Right click gave me a Properties option and I got the whole file name: Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.6_Linux_x86-64_install-rpm_en-US(1).tar
So it's not .exe. Advice?

The Linux in the middle of the name tells you it is for Linux, not for Windows. Go to
http://www.openoffice.org/download/
Drop the first selection box to choose Windows, the next (to its right) for your desired language, and the third for the chosen version. Then press the "Download full iinstallation" button. You will be transferred to a Sourceforge server and your download will start in 5 seconds. Don't click on anything else. When download has finished, double click the downloaded .exe file.

Great! All installed. Now, when someone sends me a .docx file, how do I keep it from opening in Word? D I need to take another step?

Right click on a .docx file and select "OpenWith" from the popup, choosing OpenOffice. I think there is a checkbox or link at the bottom of that window that says "Always use this application to open this type of file" (words to that effect).

Again, right-click is the key. I should learn that. Thank you again.
