[Solved] Update Attempts Fail
[Solved] Update Attempts Fail
For the past 6 months or year, I have tried to update OO several times and always just get an error message. I gave up and just
uninstalled and reinstalled it last August. I just tried again on two of my PC's with the same results. The entire error message is:
Status
Checking for an update failed
Description
Error reading data from the Internet.
Server error message: .
I would like to update automatically for security but until I can update manually, automatic certainly isn't the way to go.

Re: Update Attempts Fail
Welcome to the Forums.
This is a known issue, but, so far as I'm aware, one that remains unresolved.
The Update feature (when it works), just notifies you that an update is available. It does not do the update for you. You will still have to download the updated file, which is the full release, as OpenOffice does not release incremental updates, and then run the installation.

Re: Update Attempts Fail
Just go to http://www.openoffice.org/download/, select the version you require, download it and install it.

Rory:
That is neither an answer or a solution. The problem should either be fixed, or when on clicks on "check for updated" the instructions should be given. Giving an error message, when you know the link is not working, is unacceptable!

Re: Update Attempts Fail
With respect, it is not my responsibility to fix this - I merely pointed a User to a method whereby he might download the latest version and continue his work.Amazed99 wrote:Rory:

The error, as far as I am aware, seems to be browser and computer configuration dependent.
If you feel this problem needs to be fixed, in some manner known to you, you could volunteer to work on it; volunteers are very welcome to work on the OpenOffice development.

Re: Update Attempts Fail
Problems can be fixed by clearing your browser cookies and/or cache. Google for how to do it for your browser.

Re: Update Attempts Fail
Thanks for the advise, John_Ha. I cleared the cookies and cache and I get the same error message.

Re: Update Attempts Fail
Rory, if I was a programmer and knew how to fix the problem I would be more than happy to volunteer, but most people using OO are just that, users. We do not know how to fix these types of errors or we wouldn't be in these forums. What is Apache doing about the problem?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Update Attempts Fail
I have the same problem. I used Resource Monitor to watch the network connection:
Note the last line: soffice.bin is attempting to connect to 40.79.78.1
I used WhoIs to find the owner of that address: Hey look, it's trying to access a Microsoft website!
What is going on?

Re: Update Attempts Fail
Did you do a reverse IP lookup on that IP? https://viewdns.info/reverseip/?host=40.79.78.1&t=1

So Microsoft owns Apache or Apache stole Microsoft's IP address?
