Retreiving Files

Post by aabernal »

Happy New Year!

I need immediate help! I opened OpenOffice today to do some work and all my files were gone. Where did they go? Why did this happen? And how can I retrieve them? This is very important because I have used OpenOffice for my bank ledger and other valuable documents that are now, simply, gone.
Please help!

The files should still be on your hard disk, in the directory in which they were originally saved. You can access them by starting OpenOffice from the program button, then using /File /Open and its navigation buttons to go to the directory in which they were Saved. As you open each file, it will once more appear in OO's /File /Recent documents.

What has probably happened is that you were over-hasty in closing down your computer after last use of OO, before the internal buffering of the hard disk had written the /Recent Documents list of shortcuts to disk.

How do you know the files are gone? Did an error message pop up saying "Your files are gone"? Did you use File > Open in OpenOffice and navigate to the location of the files? Did you open the Windows file manager File Explorer and look for the files? Did you use Windows Search to search for the files? Did you have the problem with the Windows 10 Update in October that deleted user files?

1. Start AOO
2. File > Open ... Navigate to a file and open it. Do you find the files.

Or Start > Search. Type in *.odt and search for all .odt files on your PC.

In W7 go Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > View and untick Hide extensions for known file types.

You have probably lost the association between AOO and its files. Search the forum or Google with file association or set default programs.

Showing that a problem has been solved helps others searching so, if your problem is now solved, please view your first post in this thread and click the Edit button (top right in the post) and add [Solved] in front of the subject.

Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.
