Unexpected Error after "Find"

Post by Fredrick »

Open Office versions thru 4.1.5 have developed an Unexpected Error following "Find" and Arrow.
The problem does not occur if Edit/Find and Replace is used. The use of Edit/Find and Replace with Save As new file, seems to fix the file for further use.

I'm guessing that your term "Find" refers to the Find & Replace dialog generated by Ctrl+F
If so, then this is the first I've heard of it.
Lately there have been a number of posts/topics regarding OpenOffice not working as expected after a Windows 10 update.
Has your Windows 10 updated recently?
When did you notice this problem?

The "Find" is the Search Box in the top right corner with the arrows to search up and down. The arrow triggers the Unexpected Error.... The Find and Replace under Edit seems to work and causes no error. My Windows 10 is an upgrade from months ago. The problem started today, on two different computers and using files from different hard drives. Your help is appreciated.

(I do not know a version 4.4.5 of Apache OpenOffice. Please check your signature.)

Just tested the 'Find' tool again with AOO V 4.1.5 in Writer and also in Calc with newly created documents and it worked flawlessly.
Might there be a problem with your user profile? See: viewtopic.php?p=58403.
If the issue only showed for you with old files (created and edited under different versions probably), you should attach an afflicted example file for our testing.

Attached file, Astaire.ods, should demonstrate the problem using calc.
I typically open the file and use the upper right corner Find to locate information.
Thank you

The "Find" toolbar is turned on, and that is in the top right.

Using Xubuntu 18.04.01 64 bit, that Find worked OK for me, both forward and backward. Perhaps a Windows user would try it.

I just tested the 'Find' tool with the above attached file in AOO V 4.1.5 and got exactly the expected results. No errors.
What exact error message did you get? Was it actually just "Unexpected error"? What happened when you tried to quit the error?

I now would actually suppose user profile corruption. You can simply rename your user profile folder (from "user" to "userSuspended" e.g.) and run AOO anew. It will create a default profile then. Please report if the error persists.

I agree - start with renaming the User Profile. If that does not cure the problem, we should look at a recent Windows 10 update.

I went to C:/users/Fred/AppData/Roaming/OpenOffice/4/user, renamed to userFRK20180822
Rebooted computer
Restart, went back to my spreadsheet, double clicked to open, OpenOffice opened,
Welcome and fill in new user data. Spread sheet opened, tried to "Find" using "Edit","Find and Replace"
It worked. Tried to "Find" using top right Search, up arrow said reached top, Continue resulted in:

Open Office Document Recovery
Due to an unexpected error, OpenOffice crashed, All the files you were working on will now be saved.
The next time OpenOffice is launched, your files will be recovered automatically

The following files will be recovered:
2017 Astaire Family Tree.ods

Selected file and hit ENTER

Indicates Successfully Recovered
NEXT to get error details, opens file, without error details.

Attempt to use FIND with down Arrow repeats above.

Suffering the same exact issue. Here is my experience:

viewtopic.php?f=9&t=94796&sid=d23d492b9 ... 24427cdd5d

Mods, feel free to lock mine if you wish and continue here exclusively.

I'm going to leave mine un[SOLVED], simply because, though I have been just using Find & Replace, I personally use the "Find Text" search bar hundreds of times in a day. Find & Replace is great, but doesn't offer the ^Up Search option, which I use all the time and saves a -ton- of scrolling. I have seen in the past that concurrent threads may receive completely different responses and I for one am very eager to resolve this (likely Win10 Update related) issue that will easily add 15-20 minutes per week to my work flow if not resolved soon.

Thanks for everyone's assistance.

While more complicated than just clicking the Up arrow in the Find Text bar, the Find & Replace dialog (ctrl+f) does have the option to search up.
It's (unfortunately, imo) hidden under the More Options section, and is listed as Backwards (there's a check box there, so the search goes backwards (aka up) from that point.)

That's very helpful during this stopgap use phase, but as you clearly understand, the Find Text search bar is much faster and intuitive and my hope is someone will have (or come up with) a fix to allow me to use both options as I've always been able to in the past decade.

Thanks again. Really appreciate that someone is listening and offering options.

While I can't confirm that this is a Windows 10 problem, I just tested the Find Text box with both the up and down arrows on my Windows 7 system, and both arrows responded as expected.

Have been having the same problem.
Started last weekend (either 18th or 19th Aug) with the autosave function freezing the programme on a regular basis, but not every time it autosaved. The data would be lost and I'd have to shut down through the task manager. I did not use the 'find' box.
Opening a diifferent file this weekend, there is an instant crash the moment I hit enter to perform a search via the 'find' box. Search and replace works fine.
Tried different files, large, small and brand new files created for the purpose. Even tried a blank one - problem persists.
Setting up a new (OO) user profile made no difference.
Using a different Windows user account made no difference.
Disabling firewall and antivirus makes no difference.
Works fine with Windows in safe mode, so I assume it is not an OO problem, but any clues on what to look for next would be much appreciated as I use the find box constantly

Try removing the update mentioned in this post
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=94826#p452075

If that cures the problem follow the link in the post to find out how to prevent that update reinstalling.
