[Solved] OpenOffice 4.1.5 install freezes
[Solved] OpenOffice 4.1.5 install freezes
Install freezes, stops responding. I don't have any OpenOffice apps/programs open, restarting did not help. And it's wiped out my previous version somehow so I can't use any OpenOffice apps at all, and I need to use them daily!

Re: OpenOffice 4.1.5 install freezes
Thanks, but it didn't work. I followed all the steps but when trying to open the old program, I got the error message:
"soffice - Fatal Error
The program cannot be started. A general error occurred while accessing your central configuration."
Do you have other ideas?

I'd suggest verifying the download by the methods described in
Apache OpenOffice - How to verify the integrity of the downloaded file?
If it doesn't pass, try a fresh download.

Re: OpenOffice 4.1.5 intall freezes
I have tried downloading again and again, always the same result. It always stops responding before it can install. And it has wiped out functionality of my previous version. Is there a way to just download the previous version?

Re: OpenOffice 4.1.5 install freezes
Select the previous version from the dropdown on the http://www.openoffice.org/download site. I doubt that it will install; as the same thing that is stopping 4.1.5 installing will probably stop it. Almost certainly there is a message to the effect that you need to close all instances on OpenOffice before install will proceed. This should be findable using TaskManager; startt TM by Ctrl Shift Esc and look for soffice or openoffice processes on TM's tabs. Also ensure that Windows Defender is allowing access to the install directories on your hard disk.

Yep, same problem with 4.1.4. No OpenOffice running, I check each time.

Re: OpenOffice 4.1.5 install freezes
Is Windows Defender running? If so, you need to permit access to the installation files and to the directories in which OO will install. I don't run Windows 10, so cannot be more specific than that.

Re: OpenOffice 4.1.5 install freezes
Oddly enough, I'm having simultaneous trouble with Windows Defender freezing and failing when attempting to update Virus Definitions. Are the two programs connected?

See How to Change Windows Defender Controlled Folder Access Settings in Windows 10 which will tell you more about Windows Defender.

Re: OpenOffice 4.1.5 install freezes
I'm not sure if this will work for everyone else, but once I got my Windows Defender to update, I was able to install OpenOffice just fine. I had to uninstall everything with a Norton name (even though none of them was an anti-virus program), then run the Windows Defender Troubleshooter which fixed a couple problems, then I tried again with OpenOffice. Good luck!!!
