Hi and welcome to the forum!

If you open OpenOffice first, then, from the File > Open menu, does it works?

We cannot open any XLSX or DOCX files in OpenOffice 4.1.5 or earlier 4.1 versions.

The OOffice program hangs and a reboot is required.

We are using Window 7 Pro 64.

What method are you using to try and open these files?

Attempted opening by double clicking associated file, opening OOffice prop & then File Open, and etc. There are only so many ways to skin the cat. We have tried them all.

Try the LibreOffice (at least a portable version). The LO has a littlebit higher compatibility with the foreign fileformats.

Can you upload a problematic .docx and an .xlsx file here? (Then we will able to try them with LO - if you want not install the LO.)

Please, edit the initial post in the topic: add the word [Solved] at the beginning of the subject line - if your problem has been solved.

1. Download the sample.xlsx file below

2. Can you open it by double-clicking?

3. Can you open it by File > Open ...?

4. If not, upload the file (128 kB max here, or use a file share site) as all else is guesswork - it may not even be a .xlsx file.

OpenOffice hangs on "sample.xlsx".

I tried Lib. Office too. It has the same problem.

Opened xlsx in Google Sheets and saved them as xls. This also did not help.

Argh!

1. Reboot and try again.

Does this fix it? If not:

2. Uninstall AOO. If asked "Do you want to keep your settings?" say NO.
3. Delete C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user. You may need to make hidden files visible to see it. Do not miss out this step.
4. Download AOO 4.1.5 from http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html. Install it. If it asks "Do you want to use your old settings?" (or similar) say NO.
5. Download sample.xlsx and place it on your desktop. Right-click sample.xlsx > Properties > General. If it says the file is blocked as it comes from another PC then click Unblock.
6. Start AOO. File > Open ..., and navigate to sample.xlsx. Open it.

What happens?

1. Does it open?
2. Does AOO stop responding and, if so, what happens if you leave it for 60 seconds?
3. Does AOO crash and completely stop working?

Please remember that .xlsx was not designed to be compatible with anything else than MS Office. If you really need to work in that format, consider switching to... MS Office.
