OpenOffice crashes now on ANY file with linked pictures

This started just 2 days ago.
EVERY file with linked pictures now crashes OpenOffice.
I have done a full uninstall and re-install of OpenOffice.
I am using the latest version.
I save in WORD format, and all files show up fine in Microsoft WORD Viewer.
The few files saved in ODT format are OK by OpenOffice.

I'll need to switch to some other software if this continues.

Try resetting your user profile. First shutdown OpenOffice. Open any file folder and enter the following in the address bar near the top
%appdata%\openoffice\4
That will take you to a folder containing a folder named user. Rename that to user_old and restart OpenOffice. Is it stable now?

This does not help at all.

Right now I have switched to LibreOffice (downloaded today) which is working just fine.
However, why is that supposed to work?

When you reset your profile, were you prompted for name/initials on next start of OpenOffice?

Yes. I was so prompted.

Try booting Windows in Safe mode. If OpenOffice is then stable, then some other program is interfering with OpenOffice.

Try image test.odt below. It has an image which is linked to C:\Users\John\Desktop\oo.png. If you want to see the image, then create a folder C:\Users\John\Desktop\ and put image test.odt and oo.png in it. I had to zip oo.png so as to upload it as a file.
