after many years of using , open office is malfunctioning on windows 10. stropped opening up my files . uninstalled and redownloaded a couple of time with no avail ???

You have lost the file association between AOO and .odt / .ods etc.
Search the Writer forum with association or Google set file association (or default programs).
Please update your signature - we cannot tell if you are using Apache OpenOffice or Libre Office - they are completely different programs.

Re: product failure
It may also be that there are left-over OpenOffice processes running in the background, due to some form of improper close down of OpenOffice or of the computer. Start Taskmanager (Ctrl Shift Esc) and kill any soffice or Openoffice processes shown on TM's Details or Backgrounds tabs (Processes Tab on earlier Windows). Then exit TM and run OO.
