OpenOffice crashes w large (not really) imported document
So- my instructor emailed an 83 page syllabus( all text, no graphics or charts) 212.3 KB . I have created far larger documents. Each time I tried to open it, Open Office crashed for lack of a better word. I could not get OO to re-open at all. First time it happened, I restarted the computer and opened the program and restored the docs I had open.
I tried to open the syllabus again- and the same thing happened.
When I looked in task manager, there were several instances of OO listed in background processes, but it was not listed under apps. I ended all those and was able to re-start OO... but it still would not let me open the syllabus.
One of my classmates converted it to a PDF for me, which solved the immediate problem.
Instructor emailed the new syllabus last night and I still have the same problem. No one else (14 other students)had trouble opening it- but they are sheeple using Word.
Any clue as to what is happening? I have used OO for YEARS and never had an issue like this!
Thanks!

Ask your instructor for it in .doc format; he/she merely has to make a different selection from the file type dropdown in /File /Save As.

I have someone else who regularly- like every week- sends me .docx documents for editing and i never have trouble with them. What do you think is the root of the issue?

Re: OpenOffice crashes w large (not really) imported documen
Without having the document to diagnose, it is difficult to say. But obviously something specific to that document causes the problem if you can open other .docx without issue.

I see you are using Windows 10. Try opening the .docx file with WordPad (it's comes with Windows). The Windows 10 version has an option to save in an Open Document format.

Re: OpenOffice crashes w large (not really) imported documen
I am having this issue also - except it's with the spreadsheet... txt file... it's like it's too big or something and takes up a LOT OF CPU - over 50%... is there anyway to reduce the amount of CPU it's using or something?
I have to sort a lot by various attributes and each time it takes forever - often 'crashing'...
Thanks

There is no way to reduce the CPU usage - OpenOffice uses what it wants. If your spreadsheet is calculation heavy and you find its reaction in OpenOffice too slow, you should reconsider its structure. It may be that your project would be better suited to use off a database, with customised reports.

Always save as a .odt file - See [Tutorial] Differences between Writer and MS Word files for why you should always work in and save files as .odt - it applies to spreadsheets too.businesswomanOK wrote:I am having this issue also - except it's with the spreadsheet... txt file...

If I save as an .odt file, can it be re-saved as a .txt after?
The file needs to be imported onto a website and that's the only file format it recognizes...
Thanks

When editing (as .odt) is finished, using /File /Save as there are a number of options to choose from; possibly you should use .CSV, choosing the appropriate delimiter for your cells.
