Installation

Post by pcollins »

I have installed new version 4.1.3 but I am not sure if it has worked. A message came up to say that the installation had not completed. However, I have an icon for 4.1.3 on my desktop as well as the old icon for version 4. I am not very computer literate and not sure whether to use the new version or not

Well, I would delete all old versions before installing a new one... not super-duper computer literate, either, but I think it could work (often had the same problem with my smartphone updates - didn't work when I tried to simply update the old version, but installation from scratch helped)

By the way, anyone knows about the contact phone number in Taiwan of Openoffice(or Apache)? TKS!

As OpenOffice is a free download there is no telephone support. Support is provided on the Forum by volunteers in their own time on a pro bono basis.

If you are using Windows and the installed browser (Internet Explorer?) to download, it is probable that Internet Explorer has renamed the downloaded file. If so, that file should be renamed to .exe; then double clicking it ought install OpenOffice automatically.

On Windows the file "Openoffice413.msi" should have been placed on the Desktop in the directory OpenOffice 4.1.3 (<language>) Installation Files.

Most Windows users , including yours truely in the past, delete that folder once AOo is installed.

Possible solution:
download 4.1.3 again and unpack to the Desktop.
That should place "Openoffice413.msi" in the right spot again.

Try again to install 4.1.4

The installation of 4.1.4 will take care of deleting the Installation-folder from 4.1.3 for you. It now should find the Openoffice413.msi

The .msi file should be inside that folder of unpacked files, at the top level of it.

I don't understand why you are messing with this folder - it is normally sufficient to double click the downloaded file, which should have a name similar to Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.4_Win_x86_install_en-US.exe; this should then start to install; you may have to make a few choices during the install process.

RoryOF,

that is correct.

The Installation-folder however is, after installation, of no further use, except for updating, and "clutters" the desktop.
That being probably the reason for users to remove it

Ok, I've just checked the way to put Openoffice413.msi in the right spot again.

First download the appropiate version 4.1.3 of AOo

This should be an .exe file that you can double-clcik to activate.
For instance Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.3_Win_x86_install_nl.exe for the Dutch version.

Double clicking will activate the installation.
During installation the files for the installation will be placed in the directory C:\Users\user\Desktop\OpenOffice 4.1.3 (<language>) Installation Files\

After creating that directory and putting the files there installation will stop.

You will see a dialog that asks you to continue the installation wizard if you want.
You can safely decline, since the files for 4.1.3 we want are already in the right spot and there is no need to further install.

Now you can try again to install 4.1.4.
It should find the file Openoffice413.msi now

The error window shows the following messages:

"The file 'C:\Users\user\Desktop\OpenOffice 4.1.3(zh-TW)Installation Files\openoffice413.msi' is not a valid installation package for the product OpenOffice 4.1.3. Try to find the installation package 'openoffice413.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product OpenOffice 4.1.3."

I have a vague memory that some Windows update has changed the msiexec.exe file or its settings. You may find a hint on a Windows forum.
