[Solved] Windows XP JRE problem OpenOffice 4

Post by MeksPizza »

Hi,
I have samsung R50 notebook with Windows XP
What version of open office should I choose ?

Problem:
I have downloaded 4th OpenOffice from here http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html
I have installed JRE 6.
But the OpenOffice 4 doesn't open XLS files.

I tried tools to add JRE from the java folder but OpenOffice doesn't recognize it.

So, please, help me run OpenOffice on windows XP

Thanks!

Of course OO 4 opens .xls files. Start OpenOffice and use /File /Open to navigate to and select the .xls file. Or right click on an .xls file and from the popup select "Always open with", choosing OpenOffice.

You stated that you installed JRE 6, but did you install the 32 or 64 bit package?
Open Office requires the 32 bit package, which has X86 in the file name.

Oh! Thanks! I know about that and have studied the Oracle web site to find out the proper version of JRE 32 bit and tried different ones 8, 7, 6 and as I understood 6th JRE version is 32 bit but that is really not yet clear for me where from should I downnload and install proper 32 bit JRE.

So, please, help me find right source of 32 bit JRE?

I can't give you a direct URL, but the download is from http://www.java.com, using a link to archive or older versions of java (word to that effect, anyway), The 32 bit Java files have 586 in their filename.
