Windows 10, Chrome -- installed OO but can't open doc
Trying to open Word/Writer documents in Writer -- the program opens fine with working page and editing tools, Untitled 1 OpenOffice Writer, but I cannot open my stored documents. Get error messages. Help?

Hmm, not the easiest error message.
This message is very generic in fact. Here is a query about this error.
The best workaround I've found was to use zamzar to convert the files to ODF, see: [Solved] Can't open .xlsx file.
But if it happens for all your files, there may be a biggest problem. What kind of format exactly?
Perhaps LibreOffice would do better.

This sounds way too complicated. Thanks anyway.

Can you upload a sample file so that we try (see How to attach a document here)? Choose a file without any sensitive data. Use a 3rd party file sharing web site if bigger than 128kb.

Re: Windows 10, Chrome -- installed OO but can't open doc
The issue is with windows 10.despite installing open office some default file extensions were not associated with open office (mainly the ones where microsoft had its programs associated already)
.That is all in the registry.but you dont need to fiddle with the registry.
From start go to Control Pane->Default Programs-> associate a file type with a program ( not set the default programs )
search for .doc (make sure dot is included)
select it then top right button is change program
a few options come up.if cant see open office immediately (if you do then select it) so go right down list "more" etc and it will let you browse to open office in c:\ program files(x86)\openoffice4\program\
then find
soffice.exe and click open to select it ( note it may need to add -o %1 but see first if it works without)
Finished!
then all .doc will open with the correct saved file name rather than untitled.
you can repeat this for .xls .odt etc for spreadsheet again browsing to soffice -o %1 or even scalc.exe -o %1
and I expect for data base and draw
