[Solved] Documents opening as "Read-Only"

Post by mamagid »

I recently had to upgrade to Windows 10 (I dropped my computer and broke my hard drive...yeah), and since then I have had trouble opening documents from the File Explorer. Whenever I open any document from there into OpenOffice (Writer or Calc...I don't use any of the others), it gives the following error message: Document file '[file name]' is locked for editing by: [me] (07.03.2016 19:28) Open document read-only or open a copy of the document for editing.

Additionally, the File Explorer seems to have some trouble recognizing OO - when you are choosing what program to open with, it says the following the program: "C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice4\program\\swriter.exe" -o "%1" ...which I am pretty sure is not what it used to say.

Some documents are fine and open without difficulty either from the File Explorer or from within Writer. I'm stumped, especially since the date stamp on the locked file is in the future...

Thanks for the advice!

What filetype are you using?
Which filetype you can open normally, and which filetype can not?
(odt, ods, doc, docx, xls, xlsx or others...)

When AOO comes to open a file from a folder it first of all will look for a file .~lock.MyFileName.MyFileExtension# in the same folder where MyFileName.MyFileExtension is taken from the original file. If so it will assume that the file already is open for editing and will refuse to open it a second time. Otherwise it will create the locking file and open the original one. When closing a file AOO will delete the locking file automatically.

If the OS crashes the deletion of still existing locking files will not be done. Thus my suspicion: The files showing the issue for you are the ones which were opened from a still accessible drive when your system crashed (probably under hibernation). Anyway you should have a look into the respective folders for unneeded locking files and delete them. Please note that you may need to first make "hidden files" showing.
On Windows 10: LibreOffice 25.8.4 and older versions, PortableOpenOffice 4.1.7 and older, StarOffice 5.2
