"Error occurred during registration of extensions" on Vista

I recently had to F-Disk my computer and restore it to factory settings. I saved all my files on a flash drive, but now I'm trying to re-install all my software.

But when I try to install Open Office (which I've used for years and never had an issue with it), it'll almost finish up the installation, but right when it's about to finish, I'll get an error message saying "Error occurred during registration of extensions."

I saw that some people have this problem, but I haven't seen a thread yet that has described this problem under these precise circumstances. Usually, you people mention something about "previous extensions" that are conflicting. However, in my case, that can't possibly be right; I just restored the whole computer to factory settings! So how can there be a "previous" anything!

Someone, please help me!

Are you trying to install OOo 3.0?

I'm trying to install Apache OpenOffice 4.0.1.

I've successfully installed AOO 4.0.1 on a Vista laptop with no errors.

One user with the same error reported a workaround:

[Work Around] Error occurred during registration of extensio

Another user reported that installation was successful after restarting the computer and reinstalling.

[Solved] 3.4.1 install, extension registration error

If neither of these work, try creating a new user account in Vista and see if AOO can be installed from the new account.

This is a problem caused by using extensions that are not compatible with newer releases of AOO/LO.

Please be aware that millions of lines of extraneous code have been removed between versions v3+ and v4.0.
There has also been a restructuring of the files, folders and directories between these versions. (v3+ to v4.0)
This hopefully, makes for a 'leaner and meaner' OpenOffice suite of tools.

So, back to your question, if an extension 'grumbles' that it can not be recognised/registered or some other fault
transpires during it's operation, you will need to install a newer version from the repository.
Not all extensions are compatible or have been updated to version 4.0. If this is the case, your only choice
is to try and email the developer and hope he/she is aware of or can help with the problem.
