The installer asks for a directory to unpack files to, defaulting to a directory on the desktop. I accept that directory. It immediately shows:
Error opening file for writing:
C:\Users\(me)\Desktop\OpenOffice.org 3.4.1 (en-US) Installation Files\openofficeorg1.cab
I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate Service Pack 1, 64 bit, 6 GB RAM, Intel Core2 Duo 3.06 GHz. There are other posts mentioning this error, but the suggested solutions don't seem to work. I've tried to anticipate the questions that will be asked:
Windows is activated.
I have a healthy internet connection.
I shortened the directory name to have no spaces. (e.g. C:\Users\(me)\Desktop\unpacked)
I am an administrator.
I right clicked > selected run As Administrator and also right clicked > Properties > Compatibility > checked "Run this program as an administrator".
I ran in compatibility mode for Windows 7 and Windows XP SP3.
I have permission to write to that directory; I created a text file in it after the error.
I have 278 GB free on C:.
I have downloaded three times from openoffice.org and checked the md5 sum.
I disabled (even uninstalled) antivirus and my firewall.
java -version returns:
java version "1.7.0_05"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_05-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.1-b03, mixed mode)
I have run these other installers with no problem:
Chrome, Firefox, various drivers, Gamefly, VMware Workstation, Photoshop, Acrobat, Lightroom, Cygwin, Minecraft
Any ideas? Thanks.

Create a new administrator account and install using that account.

Odd...that worked. Windows shows that I am an administrator, and using the new administrator account I created, I double checked that my first account is shown as an administrator. Do you know why that worked?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Have you ever renamed your original administrator account? Renaming accounts can cause problems, but I don't know if it's the cause of this particular problem.

Nope. It's a fairly new, fresh, vanilla install of Windows 7. Curious.
