OpenOffice 3.4.1 will not install on my Windows 8 Computer

I just bought a windows 8 computer, downloaded openoffice but it will not install. I downloaded it twice thinking perhaps the first was corrupted but the second did the same thing. When I click it to run, it asks for confirmation to install but then nothing happens.

Did you download Apache OpenOffice from http://www.openoffice.org/download/ ?

I am having the exact same issue as pinktoe. Download from the link Bill lists, run the download, say yes to confirmation to install, then nothing happens. Anyone else got this download to work on a Windows 8 computer?

It's worked for me several times. Have you tried right-clicking the downloaded file selecting the Troubleshoot compatibility option?

I tried a couple options within the Troubleshoot Compatibility. It still will not install. At the point it should be installing, nothing happens. :(

Does the Reliability Monitor show any information about the failed installations?

Bill, where/how do I find the Reliability Monitor?

Press Win + W to open settings search. Type "reliability" in the search box. Select "View reliability history".

The reliability monitor does not show anything concerning the Open Office install. After clicking on the download file, a window pops up asking for permission to continue. After clicking yes to that, nothing happens. It's like the install never starts, thus there is nothing for the reliability monitor to report on. Also, I checked the Task Manager after saying yes to allowing the program to make changes to my computer (i.e. permission to continue). It does not show up in the Task Manager. Looks like the install program closes after that first window.

Try setting up a new administrator account, then download and install using that account.

You could also use Process Monitor to try and troubleshoot the problem. I can't find any bug report or other reports about similar problems in Windows 8.

I tried right clicking on the download and selecting "Run as Administrator". That gave the same results as all other attempts.

Not me. I've never had any problem installing any version of OOo/AOO.

Did you download from openoffice.org? There is no registration required for AOO 3.4.1.

jeroenchristensen:

Have you 'googled' for this specific problem?
As we do not know who manufactured the PC/Laptop or anything about the hardware it contains, it is very difficult
to offer any suggestions as to what is the cause of your problem.

It might be prudent to make enquiries with the manufacturer who should be able to help with installing third party software.

If you have a WIndowsRT set up this might be the cause of the problem. MS are moving away from
the x86 Desktop type PC/Laptop to the ARM app (as in Apple) type OS.
MS stipulate that all new Win8 PC/Laptops will be ARM type with Secure boot( this can not be disabled)

I fear there may be trouble ahead for most PC users who are going to get confused with all this change.

Does the error message say "error on registering" or possibly "an error occured during registration"? I can't find anything about "error on registering".

[Solved] ERROR: An error occured during registration

Hi, ODBC Data Source Administration includes 32 bit drivers as .xls, .csv and ODBC for Oracle drivers in win8 by default system installation. Most MS .db drivers are 32bit - only .sql drivers are 64bit. Office 32bit should fit it all better than a 64bit version.
