OpenOffice Crashing

Issues with installing under all versions of MS Windows

OpenOffice Crashing

Postby peasedmh » Wed Jan 16, 2013 12:58 am

I'm trying to run OO3.4 on my home PC on Win 7 Home, but cannot keep any document open for more than a minute or so before it crashes, forcing me into recovery mode. This is the second time that I've experienced this problem, which seemed to have been fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling the OO suite. I'm reticent about doing this again, as I had trouble with successfully installing OO again, nearly leaving me without the ability to access any of my documents (even for a minute) . Anybody else had this problem and fixed it on a long term basis by other the reinstall approach ?

One thing to try:
Tools > Options > OO.org > Online Update > Check automatically: OFF (unchecked)

Are you using OOo 3.4? There is a newer version out: 3.4.1. You might try upgrading if you haven't already.

Any update on this? There may be other hints (including one found by the devs).

I'm having the same problem.
I used the original OO a few years ago without any problems, but I uninstalled after it went to Apache because it locked up so much.
I thought I would try again & have just downloaded 3.4.1 but exactly as described - open for a minute or so then crashes. Haven't been able to do a single thing!

A dev has recently found this trick, it should fix your problem: close AOO (and Quickstarter) and go to the folder $USERPROFILE/3/user/extensions/bundled/ (where $USERPROFILE is the root path to your profile).
Rename the files extensions.pmap and extensions.db. Restart AOO and see if there is any improvement.

For user profile information: [Tutorial] The OpenOffice User Profile.

i do not understand what you mean by 'renaming'... renaming to what?

also, there is no .bd file present.

Any other name. Best way is often to insert a meaningless character, such as Xextensions.pmap etc. The other file may be hidden and you may need to enable viewing of hidden files (details in operating system Help). If it is definitely not there, then just rename what you can.

I finally got aoo to stop crashing after trying every suggestion on this forum. The only thing that worked for me was turning off the auto-updater. So far, no crash.

Just gave that a try with the same process as before. It all worked but its slow at doing it. Loading the XLSX file took 41s, saving it to ODS format took 53s, and reloading the ODS file took 31s. My system isn't exactly cutting edge but it shouldn't be THIS slow. During reloading of the ODS file one CPU core is running flat-out the whole time.

I also experienced Open Office crashing shortly after opening a file, or just launching one of the applications. I concur that turning off the automatic update functions has, so far, solved the problem.
