[Solved] OOo 3.2.1 update will not run on Windows 7 64-bit

Post by RichPella »

While I slept, OpenOffice took it upon itself to download an update. I am now running OOo 3.2.0 (Build 9483). The new update file sitting on my desktop is called OpenOffice.org_3.2.1_Win_x86_install_en-US.exe.
When I attempt to open the update program, I get the following message:
The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and the contact the software publisher.
I am running Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit edition. What do I need to do to install the newest update?

I've never been aware that OOo will find an update and download it automatically. It doesn't work that way and requires user intervention. OOPs excuse me it can download automatically. Try downloading a fresh copy from http://download.openoffice.org/index.html. See this thread for the same problem http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=103439.

I had the same problem, though not from automatic download, and this solution worked for me.
Thank you thomasjk.

Okay, doing the manual download from the website worked. Very weird that the file OOo downloaded itself didn't work.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2.
I get the repeated signal "Update stalled" while using Writer from the automated update system. This is the Update to 3.2.1 from 3.2.0. Cause is given as "failed writing received data to disk/application". The Help page says something about "permissions for the installation directory".

I had this problem with an earlier version of OOo and solved it by uninstalling it and installing the latest version. The small automatic updates downloaded OK for a time but it seems to be stalling againn with the update to the new 3.2.1.

This is a Home laptop and I am its "Administrator" so I don't see what the problem is. Any ideas?

As stated in my post above download a fresh copy directly from www.openoffice.org. Turn off the auto updates. It doesn't work very well.

When installing on Win7, I always suggest lowering your security settings or select install as administrator. If you settings are medium or high, when a call is issued for which permission has not been granted the install will stop.

1. Security settings: Is this also true on Vista Home Premium?
2. Since no-on else has ever used my laptop I assume I am the Administaror - but it didn't work.

Right Click on the install file and select Run As Administrator.

I have reduced my security settings on Avast to Low and suspended Threatfire, then clicked the dowload bar. I still get "failed writing received data to disk/application". Perhaps I should go to the correct Update for 3.2.1 and retry. I would be grateful for the URL.

The cause "failed writing received data to disk/application" implies to me that the download stalled because the file couldn't be saved in the download destination. That could be caused by not having write permission for the download destination. What is the download destination set in Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Online Update?

Regarding turning off antivirus and reducing security settings, I've never had to do either when installing or updating OOo on Vista SP2. I even downloaded and installed ThreatFire then installed OOo 3.2.0 and updated to OOo 3.2.1 using the Online Update while Windows Security Essentials and ThreatFire were running and security settings were at their default levels. No problems at all--the update file downloaded without error and UAC elevated priveleges when required for the actual installation of the update.

Bill -

I just went to "Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Online Update" and clicked "check now" which produced the same "failed writing received data to disk/application". The panel just below that announcement says "Download destination - C- Program Files - OpenOffice.org 3" - with a button to its right offering the possibiliy to "Change" the destination. Perhaps this is what I should do? But to where?

Obviously the present setting Download destination - C- Program Files - OpenOffice.org 3 is where it seemed to want to go by default. No good though.

The default download destination should have been the Desktop (C:\Users\<username>\Desktop). Change it and the problem should be solved.

Thank you.

Did so. Found the 3.2.1 on the Desktop and executed Install as Administrator. During the install process the Wizard kept referring to 3.2 the older file onthe Desktop and not 3.2.1 - the one which I used to initiate the install of course. Does this mean that all the 3.2.1 updates willbe migrated to the original 3.2 file?
Otherwise it looks like I have just reinstalled 3.2 according to the Install Wizard!
Should I delete one of these files from Desktop?

Anyway, this feature is not very robust. Better go to the download site directly as advised above.

Was that addressed to me Hagar? You seem to confirm that all I did was to reinstall 3.2 - which is what it looked like. I will have to consider whether it is even worth bothering with the download site until version 4 comes out.

What is the version number in the Help>About OOo dialog? You should see here if it's 3.2.1 or just 3.2.
A X.Y.1 version is just a bug fix release, hence no specific marketing compared to its original version (X.Y.0).

Note there should be 3.3 and 3.4 at least before 4.0.

Since all accounts in Vista normally run without administrator privileges, the privileges must be elevated before OOo can be installed. Using the "Run as Administrator" option is one way to elevate the privileges, but if you simply double-click the downloaded file, User Account Control will ask if you started the program and elevate the privileges if you tell it to continue. If you double-click the downloaded file while in a user account, you also have to enter a valid administrator password.

The downloaded file will have the complete version number 3.2.1. When that file is executed, it unpacks installation files to a folder which just has the partial number 3.2. When installation is complete you can delete the folder. The downloaded file can also be deleted, but I keep a copy of it in the Downloads folder just in case OOo needs to be reinstalled.
