[Solved] Lots of Crashes, Vista 64 & default printer on LAN

Post by rasheid2kx »

Firstly i searched and did not find a solution. I installed ooo 3.1.1 on my vista home pre 64, viao fw-vgn and all was well, now all of a sudden i have ooo crashing for different reasons.

1-> when i try to open draw files that contains large images or lots of images
2-> creating a presentation from the wizard, and selecting use template with the preview boxed checked.
3-> page format dialog
.....list goes on and on

what is most unusual is that i tried the resetting the profile but that did not work.... :? but here is something that did work i created a guest account on the system and logged into the guest to use the guest and found that ooo was working perfectly from that account. so i thought i would copy the guest profile to my ooo folder.... that did not work either.... can someone pls help. why would ooo work for the guest user but stop working correctly on my personal user account that has administrative privileges .

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Do you have any special character in your username (your Windows login)? there may be some troubles in such case.

Maybe a registry issue? I believe different users may have different registry settings, although I don't know that OOo uses any such settings.

Or possibly a conflict with something loaded "in the background" (as with the system tray) for one user and not the other.

I currently have something which disables all zoom functions in Writer's "Page Preview" mode. It happens to every OOo version I have installed, but starting with a fresh profile does not fix it. It affects my regular login, but not a separate testing login.

This is on Linux, so I'm not suggesting that it has any correlation with your problem, only that OOo depends on stuff in the system environment other than the settings profile.
Edit: Just for the record, I happened to find a resolution to the zoom problem. It seems to be some conflict with Gnome's accessibility functions. I was playing around with some of the AT features in Gnome and forgot that I left them "enabled". Once I disabled them, OOo is working normally again.

First of all i would like to thank you for responding to my queries, i absolutely love open office. I could not afford ms office when i was in college and found out about ooo from a news report one day.

i dont have any special characters in my user name.... but i have a strong suspicion that a program i uninstalled has something to do with it... (windows live one care, it came with my notebook  ) but restoring windows did back to a previous date before i uninstalled the software did not work so im not sure...

Question: Is ooo storing my profile some where else?

To be honest it seems like ooo is being sabotage by ms, but then that would be beyond their business ethics.

If you start, using your regular login, in Safe Mode, does the problem go away? If so, it is almost certain that the culprit is some other background application running for that user.

I found the problem :D , I had a canon mp830 printer that was on my LAN more specifically connected to my Ubuntu server running cups. So what was happening was that the canonmp830 was my default printer and i found out that when i was not connected to the LAN ooo was having a lot of crashes(I don't know if this a Operating System, Laptop or Printer specific issue).

Heres the work around:
If you have a pdf or xml printer select either as a default printer(and all my worries were gone).

Is this a bug that developers should know about?
I do a little programming and i would gladly make a patch but I'm so busy i know i wouldn't get it done for now, plus learning a new sdk is a lot of work in it self. So I hope this would be a great contribution to OOo users

I would like to thank the moderators and everyone who assisted me in finding the bug. :bravo: :bravo: :bravo:

This post was originally titled "Profile abnormalities" and i changed it to "Lots of Crashes, Vista 64," as i thought it would be easier to find by persons looking for a fix.

Thanks for the feedback. Indeed, that's a relatively known issue: [Solved] Documents "load" for minutes. Don't know if there is a report on the issue tracker however.

NB: I've added some details to your title now that the root cause has been identified.
