Email attachment won't open

Post by cheersbye »

Welcome beginner. What is your question or comment?
Please try to briefly and clearly tell us: What you want, What you tried, and What happened.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, please go easy on me, I'm a bit of a tech phobe and not the best with computers!

This is a new problem for me.

I am trying to send an yahoo email with an attachment. The file opens on my laptop. I use Internet Explorer, the email sends and is received okay, but the attachment won't open, not on my laptop or anyone elses.

I have searched the forums and in answer to the faq's please see below.

*I use Windows XP and Open Office Version 3.0
*I have checked the box Automatic File Name Extension.
*I have had OpenOffice for about 3 or 4 months. I previously saved as an .odt file and saved to my desktop - as opposed to my documents - if possible I would prefer to continue doing this as it keeps it nice and organised. I know where I am with it! (Following on from advice on the forum, I have tried to open as a .doc but this won't work either).

If possible, I would like to be able to save file and send it as an email attachment in the same format - less chance of errors on my part!

Hope someone can help, I'd really appreciate it, Thanks Adam

Does it help: [Solved] E-Mail Attachments?

Thanks to add '[Solved]' at beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

This is what I did;

Opened document.
Save as...
Changed settings to = Microsoft 97/2000/XP (.doc) in desktop
Checked automatic filename extension.
Close file and send email as normal.
Opened email, read as normal, all appears well.
I am fine up until this point....

Try to download attachment.
I get the option to Download, which I accept
I get the option to Open, Save or Cancel.
Thereafter, I get a box which is as follows...

File Download
Getting File Information-
Estimated Time left-
Download to-
Transfer rate-

There is an icon picture of a bit of paper floating from planet earth(!!) towards a folder - this happens continuously until I cancel....

That is absolutely all the info that I have, am hoping you can help before I pull my hair out!!!
cheers, appreciate it

If you send as attachment another file (a .jpg for example), does it work fine?
Do you use an online webmail? Have you tried to right click the attachment and select save target as?

Yes, Jpeg works fine.
Email browser I am using yahoo.
But I also used a webserver earlier on today, and that didnt work either.
Left-click of mouse doesn't provide ''Save as'' an option.

That help?

Try to zip the .doc file, sometimes mail servers have problems recognizing OOo exported .docs.

I'm really confused as it was working fine up until just a couple of days ago!
Apologies and thank again,!

Compress your .doc file in a .zip archive with an archive manager.

But if it was working fine before, do you remember any event that would have led to that situation? Windows update? webmail change? ...

Only thing is that I have a Norton Virus protector and it was updated about ten days ago. It was only at the weekend, that I attempted to follow the Norton advice and backup my files. Since then, I have had a couple of issues--
1) norton is advising me that I am low on storage space and should buy more. I was planning on avoiding this as I've already spent money with Norton, and can't afford to keep on buying storage. I think that they have backed up alot of files that I don't particuarly need and thats why I haven't bothered on buying more storage-- I was planning on going through norton and working out which files I dont need to be backed up. Since then I have had a problem with a tracking cookie that seems to be worse than normal.
2) the problem with the email attachment!

Sorry, Im still not sure about "Compress your .doc file in a .zip archive with an archive manager", so I am currently doing a bit of searching online to find out what this means

"Compress your .doc file in a .zip archive with an archive manager"

Norton does a Registry Cleanup and Disk Optimization - which i think is a means of compressing the files?

Could it be something to do with Norton?
apologies in advance!

Winzip is a very known application under Windows but there is also PowerArchiver, ...

Sorry, I've stopped maintaining any system running Windows so can't tell about Norton and its impact.

I use Windows 10 and just (unfortunately updated open office from 4.1 to 4.1.5), now I cannot open any attachments nor can the recipient? I have tried to install previous version of Open Office and cannot. I am baffled, tried to save in different formats, nothing can be opened as an attachment.

Please help me!

Your problem has nothing to do with updating AOO so search elsewhere for changes you or Microsoft W10 has made to your PC.

Try this file. If necessary an e-mail recipient or a downloader may have to right-click the file and un-click UNBLOCK.

What do you mean by "cannot open"? Does File > Open ... work? or is it clicking the file icon does not work?

As a new poster you will find much useful information in the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials, the up to date Writer guide and the Writer Manual. May I suggest you bookmark the pages.

Press F1 to access the Help screen and search for your problem

The chapter headings in the manual are:

1 - Introducing Writer
2 - Setting up Writer
3 - Working with Text
4 - Formatting Pages
5 - Printing, Exporting, Faxing and E-Mailing
6 - Introduction to Styles
7 - Working with Styles

13 - Working with Master Documents

When a pop-up window opens, click the Help button for extensive help on that function - it is often more comprehensive than the manual.
