Failed or frozen system

Hi I was using the Apache Open Office this evening when it failed. Id saved a spreadsheet and a text doc to Desktop. I clicked on the icon - no joy.
This happened a few years ago but cant recall the steps given to correct this.
There may be other versions other than 4.1.7. I found them once to delete but cant find them even tho i didnt risk it.
Can anyone suggest how to return Office to norm.
