Lost files

Post by Senior Citizen »

My computer skills are very limited. Recently I had a problem with my computer(Windows 10). Had to download Apache again and lost all files. Is there anyway I can recover them?

What makes you think the files are lost? Did your "problem" involve a re-install of Windows?

Normally, after a reinstall or version upgrade (from 3 to 4,for example) of OpenOffice, the files are still in the computer folder in which they were originally Saved. By default this is given in the folder pointed to in OpenOffice /Tools /Options /OpenOffice /Paths : My Documents.

If you navigate to this folder, as you select and open each file it will once more appear on the Recent Documents list in OpenOffice.

A reinstall of Windows may have erased your disk drive, causing loss of your files. The Recent Documents list in OpenOffice is merely a shortcut list of the files you have recently edited.
Edit: If you are unsure of your computer skills, ask someone locally for help - most of a younger generation will have adequate computer skills.

Your files are still there.

1. Open File Explorer
2. Type *.od* in the SEARCH box
3. Press Enter.

This finds all AOO files (.odt, .ods, .odp etc) on your PC.

See the Writer Guide, the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials and Writer for students.

Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.
