[Solved] Java 8 update 291 not found on Win10 32-bit

Post by Bjo »

SOLVED. I have OpenOffice 4.1.10 installed on a Windows 10 64-bit computer as well as a 32-bit laptop. Java 8 update 291 is OK on the 64-bit but not found on the 32-bit. However the Java 8 update 201 is found on the 32-bit. I have tried to add update 291 but no JRE found.
I have just had strange crashes on two database applications on the 64-bit. Something to do with Java 8 update 291? Database entries duplicated and next automatic key jumped from about 6000 to about 45000.

Well, Windows with all its low level snake oil plus Oracle Java plus unmaintained 32-bit office. What do you expect from this cocktail?
Our Windows systems run with the built-in MS antivir, OpenJDK (various versions for different applications), LibreOffice 6.4. There is a mail merge problem with LibreOffice 7 Base on Windows but LO 6.4 is doing just fine. That's all I can tell.
Some application hopping with try&error in safe mode is all I can recommend since I have no idea how to debug anything under Windows. Apart from resetting the user profile, there is nothing that can be done on the OpenOffice side of the problem since OpenOffice is a dead project.

As Openoffice stays at 32-bit it uses only your 32-bit Java. Your 64-bit java is not seen by open office.
So either your crashes are not related to Openoffice or not related to your 64-bit java...

It is the other way around. The 32-bit Java 8 update 291 works with OpenOffice 4.1.10 on the Win10 64-bit computer but not on the 32-bit Win10. The 32-bit Java 8 update 201 is OK on the 32-bit laptop.
Anyway,I have started to follow the advice from Villeroy and downloaded LibreOffice (not an advice I expected in this forum).

Try AdoptOpenJDK x86, fine for me for my old Win7 32-bit

Sorry Mountaineer. I just quickly scanned your answer and missed that it referred to the database corruption only (it was passed bedtime). I had both versions of Java installed. After I uninstalled the 64-bit the 32-bit Java update 291 is found on the 64-bit machine but still not on the 32-bit machine.
Thanks for the suggestion Mr Dandy but I have installed LibreOffice 64-bit on the 64-bit computer (requiring the 64-bit Java) and the 32-bit LibreOffice on the 32-bit laptop (requiring the 32-bit Java). Java 8 update 291 is found by LibreOffice in both machines. So far no problem reading the OpenOffice files. This will be my workaround. No proper solution to my problems with OpenOffice but I will try to mark this thread as SOLVED.

I would not consider LibreOffice as a "workaround" for OpenOffice. LO is the successor to OO: https://www.libreoffice.org/discover/li ... penoffice/

You have no "OpenOffice files". They are "Open Document Files". As far as text and spreadsheets are concerned there are many applications which support large parts of this standard and LibreOffice is just the new OpenOffice which supports all of it.

Regarding input forms, there is one thing you have to know: LibreOffice 7.x supports the latest version of the Open Document Standard. After saving either a standalone form document or an embedded form document with its containing database document with LibreOffice, you can not use that form document with OpenOffice anymore. There is no such problem when you just use the form to edit your connected database.
This has nothing to do with your crash problem. This incompatibility between different versions of the same document standard can be avoided. Call the options dialog in LibreOffice, section Load/Save > General and set the ODF version to 1.2 (extended) which is the last version compatible with OpenOffice.

Thank you Zizi64. My remaining eye is not 100%, but now that you mention it, I can see some small white letters on ligth blue background. May I suggest that someone make it more readable. I only saw Appace OpenOffice forum.

If I know it exactly, there is not chance to change the colors of the forum.
