Files hidden or deleted accidentally by family member

Post by krhammett3 »

I seem to have lost all of my Writer and Calc documents. Likely they were deleted or hidden accidentally by my son. Is there any way to retrieve them? I don’t know where they might be.

If you try to open them from the recent files list in AOO, what happens?
Check the Windows trash bin. If they have been accidentally deleted they should be there. Few chances that your son had hit Shift+Delete (permanent deletion).
Have you performed a search through the system?

It may be that his son has generated a new OpenOffice User Profile in his name; the files should be in the original folder in which krhammett3 Saved them; I do not know modern Windows sufficiently well to suggest the probable path to that folder.

If, in OpenOffice, he uses /File /Open and the navigation buttons to go to that folder, each selected file should open and will thereafter appear in Recent Documents list.

They are still there but a d*mn Windows update has probably changed their icons.

Search for *.odt / *.doc / *.ods / *.xls etc to find them.

See the Writer Guide, the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials and Writer for students.

Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.
