Hi and welcome to the forum!

If your files have been stored on your hard drive, then no problem. Open AOO and you'll be able to open them. However, please remember that the .docx/xlsx/... formats have not been designed to be compatible with anything else than MS Office. Thus, some glitches to be expected when imported. After opening, save then in ODF (.odt/ods/...).

If you want a better compatibility with MS Office, try LibreOffice instead.

To make AOO/LO the default application for your documents, see: [Tutorial] Setting the default program to open files.

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the *EDIT button if your issue has been fixed.

Hello,

try first the instructions (link by Hagar Deledt) to set OpenOffice as the default program to handle .odt and other OpenOffice-files.

Windows shows not the actual format of the file, but the icon of the Program wich is the default to handle this files.
And MS likes to reset this to their own tools during updates....

You can right click your files and choose "open with..." to select your program of choice and there is a checkbox to make this persistent.
