AOO Disappeared OpenOffice 4.1.6

On opening my AOO I was faced with a new user registration window for 4.1.7, and all my files were gone!!!

Open Office 4.1.6 Windows 7 Professional.

AOO was probably closed ungracefully causing a new user profile to be built on opening, including the request for user information. This also means that the recent file list will have been cleared, but your documents should still be where ever you saved them and available via File | Open, or double click on the file name in Explorer if your file associations are correctly set.

Thank you for responding, the plot thickens, ran a search, have about 5 days worth missing, so created 2 new files and both have saved as Word documents...don't like :'(

Do you mean that you chose to save them as .doc(x); or did you save as native .odt but the file icons show as Word? If the latter, your file associations are set to use MS Office for AOO documents. Windows updates have been known to reset associations to point to MS Office.
