Re: File was just saved as "File"
A few things to try:
1) Check your back-up folder (as listed in your Open Office settings) for a back-up of the file.
2) Try using a file recovery tool, like Recuva, to recover a back-up.
3) Try making a copy of the file, then renaming the file changing the extension from .pdf to .ods, then opening the .ods file
4) Try the PDF extension at https://extensions.openoffice.org/en/node/17351 then copy and paste into a new spreadsheet.
Please note that in both of these cases, odds are good that any formulas and cell formatting will be lost. Additionally information like dates may be taken as text, rather than a formatted number.

If the only problem is that the file was saved without an extension, you should just be able to add the ods to the file name. Right click on the file, select Rename, and add .ods to the name. You will get a warning but don't worry about it.

Re: File was just saved as "File"
No file recovery should be necessary. Just add ".ods" to the file name as described by FJCC. Files aren't saved as PDF just because the automatic extension option is turned off. That option affects the file name only, not the file format.

Why the delay? It only takes a few seconds.
