Re: Database Registering
It sounds like you have created a Base file (a .odb file) and saved it?
And then later you go to Tools->Options, expand the label for OpenOffice Base, choose "Databases", press the "New" button, press the "Browse" button, navigate to your (already saved) .odb file, and pressed "OK"?
Where in those steps do you get the error message?

Re: Database Registering
No, I have not saved a database yet. I am only at the 2nd window of the
database Wizard. Where it asks, Do you want to register the database in openoffice.org.
It is at this point that the error message appears. It appears to be looking into my files for openoffice.org.
Thanks for the fast response!!

Re: Database Registering
In the second window, with the radio button "Yes, register the database for me" selected, you press the "Finish" button which pops up a file navigation window? You navigate to a folder you have write privileges to (you have saved other documents there), type in a name in the "file name" field near the bottom of the window, and press the "OK" button, and then get the error message?
Do you get the same error message if you make the radio button selection "No, do not register the database" and then follow the other steps in the previous paragraph?

Re: Database Registering
The error message is, "Location is not available". Why is it trying to find openoffice.org in my files? Why isn't going directly to openoffice .org so it can register my first database.
I am totally at a dead end. I cannot bypass this in order to start openoffice base.
I will appreciate any further help.

Re: Database Registering
In order to help you, I need to know the answers to these questions:
1. Where are you trying to save the file - What is the file path?
2. Have you ever saved any other kind of file in this path?
3. What filename are you using when you try to save the file?
4. Do you get the error message after pressing the "OK" button on the file navigation window?
5. Do you get the same error message if you make the radio button selection "No, do not register the database" before trying to save the file?
Registration is local to your computer - it is used if you want to export the database information to another file on the same computer, such as a spreadsheet. It has nothing to do with the internet, nothing to do with openoffice.org, ONLY with your local computer. If you're not planning on exporting your data to a spreadsheet or other file on your same computer, there is no need to register.
I suspect you are trying to save the file with a filename that is not allowed, or in a folder where you do not have write privileges, and I would need the answers to my questions above to confirm this.

Thanks for your patience!!
1. The program picks a path to save the file. How do I arrange for the program to pick the right path? I have always created the file and then saved it. oo.org has one save it before it is created.
This is new to me. If I name a file and save it on a specific path the program would then consider it an existing file? When I choose to use an existing file the program worked. I still need to be able to open a new file in order to follow Andy Channelle's program.
4.Yes, I get the error message.
5. Yes

The path labeled as "My Documents" should be a valid path since it is used as a starting point for many file picker dialogs. When a file picker tries to start in a folder that does not exist, it may throw that error. But even with that error you should be able to pick a valid path anyway.

C:\Users\Cooper\Documents\My Document 3\Jason and Christa\Practice base files
This is the file path that pops up in oo.org window when trying to register the base file.
How do I change the pop up to the correct path.
Thanks again for your patience!!

Re: Database Registering
I think one misunderstanding may be about "trying to register" the Base file. That's not what is going on after the "Finish" button is pressed. What OpenOffice is asking you to do is to save the Base file. The top of the window will say "Save As". Registration is something that Base does (or doesn't do, depending on the radio button) after you save the file.
The path you posted seems like it should be a valid path, but just in case you might try navigating up a few folders - maybe just
C:\Users\Cooper\Documents
Changing the path is the same as any folder navigation in your operating system. I have Windows 7, and mine looks like this: What filename are you trying to use?

I do not have any trouble with saving files or file paths. The problem is: C:\Users\Cooper\Documents\My Document 3\Jason and Christa\Practice base files. This is the path that the program
creates, which in error. the question is: How must I arrange the files so that the program picks the correct path? By the way, the "Practice Base Files is not in any of my files". This may be the culprit
in the first place. But I still would like to know the criteria the program uses to create the path. This problem only occurs when I opt for a new database.

Re: Database Registering
When you press the "Finish" button, a window should pop up like the picture I posted. Does this happen for you?
If that window does appear, just click on any folder (In the picture, I have three arrows pointing to different places folders are shown) to move to a different path. Have you tried this? What happens?

Re: Database Registering
Yes the window pops up and I click on the file name slot at the bottom of the save as window after I changed the file to New File15, which is currently listed in my documents files. Then I clicked on the save bar at the bottom of the window. The error message then pops up again, Wrong Path. We are now right back to day one. It seems like we are going around in circles.
If I click on open an existing file it works OK, but how do I know if a file ever gets registered? How do I delete a registered file? Is there a way to list the registered files?
I just noticed that the center portion of the Save As window has DOCUMENTS LIBRARY in large print and Practice Base Files listed in small print below the large print.
This is apparently how the practice base files got into the original erroneous path. Is there some other way to get files registered? Please help!

Re: Database Registering
You cannot save a new file under a name that already exists. Try changing the file name to one that does not exist. Then what happens?v5oov12oo44oo wrote:On the file name slot.. I changed the file to New File15, which is currently listed in my documents files
As far as going to a new folder:
At the top of the window is a bar with folder names. In my screenshot this shows the folders:
Libraries
Documents
My Documents
Base
In my screenshot I was inside the folder "Base". If I clicked on the words "My Documents" that would take me to the folder "My Documents". If I clicked on the word "Documents" that would take me to the folder "Documents". If I clicked on the folder "Libraries" that would take me to the folder "Libraries".
On the left hand side of the screen is a different list of folders: several folders under "Favorites", several under "Libraries", and several under "Homegroup". Again, clicking on any of these folder names moves to a different folder.
To register an existing Base file, go to Tools->Options, expand the label for OpenOffice Base, choose "Databases", press the "New" button, press the "Browse" button, navigate to your (already saved) .odb file, and press "OK"v5oov12oo44oo wrote:Is there some other way to get files registered?

That question can be interpreted two ways. If you are asking, "How do I de-register a registered file": Go to Tools->Options, expand the label for OpenOffice Base, and choose "Databases". Highlight the file you want to de-register. Press the "Delete" button.v5oov12oo44oo wrote:How do I delete a registered file?
If you are asking "Is deleting a registered file any different than deleting a normal file?": No, there is no difference. Delete a registered file the exact same way you would delete any other file on your computer.

Thanks for all of your help. I deleted all OO.o files so that I started all over back to day one. As a result I no longer get the error message. So it is now working fine. Thanks again.

Linking Tables and how they work.
Hi Again, Having a hard time linking 3 tables in an example guide. Customer table, product table, and order table. The program would not accept the tables. So I deleted one table which I thought
was the problem but It did not help. Then re-entered the table. The tables each time were listed in little boxes on the screen as required. In the process of trying to make corrections only two tables would show up on the screen. Is there some way to edit the procedure at this point? Could you reference some document that explains linking in detail preferably in 4.1.1?
If I write a program based on forms for easy entry can I email the program to someone with Openoffice 4.1.1?
How can one navigate between reports and forms with the main program? I have been doing by hit or miss.

Re: [Solved] Database Registering
If you have a new question, it is good practice to start a new thread. Especially with this one being marked [Solved], it is unlikely to get as many eyes.
When you start your new thread, please link the example guide you are using. I can't tell from your description what you are trying to do.

Re: [Solved] Database Registering
I went to the appropriate forum which I presume you meant "beginners" but could not find anywhere to click on "new topics".
I can not remember how I started with the first thread.
I have worked with "Excel " for over 10 years, so I am not just getting started with computers
Another thing that is confusing is the pink statement on the forum that says, "Do not ask questions". Please tell me how to start a new topic.

Some of the forums are meant only for tutorials or examples. These forums have the warning about not asking questions, and you should not post in the forums with that warning.
I think your question would be fine in the Base forum. Here is a picture with the new topic button circled:
