As I understand it, to make hard drives appear faster, with the reduction in memory cost and the availability of low cost controllers, internal buffering has been built into hard drives. They remember the data sent to them, then sort it, so that it can be written in one movement of the heads across the disk platters. This makes modern hard drives much quieter - old codgers such as myself and several other Forum volunteers remember the constant "zip zip, click zip click" of older hard disks.

If the power goes off before these internal buffers in the drive have been written, that data is lost. So a good practice is to wait a few seconds for drives to finish their work after an "OK to power off message" from the operating system. That message has no knowledge of the internal buffering of the hard drives and the few extra seconds that one may wait is a lot less than the time taken to attempt to recover a damaged file/data, and ultimately to rebuild it.

Since you cannot open your Base file ( *.odb ) . . . if you post your file here, or, some other file sharing link ( such as MediaFire http://www.mediafire.com/ ) so I can determine if I might be able to open the file ( at least the database portion ) . . . I will try to help.

Good day,

I need urgent help please!

I've been working on my database for a couple of years now and have all our clients' information on this database. I did reporting on it yesterday (2018/05/02) and everything worked fine. I saved and exited like I always do. Then this morning when I wanted to open my database, it just doent open at all. First I thouht it might be an OpenOffice issue, but I can create a new database so it is not the program...

Does anyone have any advise on how I can resolve this problem?

Thank you,

Chris

NOTE: OpenOffice Version 3.3 is a very old ( too old ) version. Additionally, since this is such an IMPORTANT / URGENT set of information, you should always have a backup of the file.

Hello, unfortunately I experienced the same problem. Once I opened the database, it gave a menu with different options for the file type. No matter which one I select, Open Office still doesn't recognize the format. I also installed the latest version and the problem persists. Can someone please send me directions on how to make it open, or it usually crashes in different ways and there is no general way to fix it?

Thanks a lot.

Joe

Sliderule successfully fixed the database, and of course as every situation is different, it is difficult to provide general solution. Thank you very much!

It is helpful if we are told the name of the underlying database engine.

Does the status bar look like this?

Did you install a 32-bit version of Java? Notice the C:\Program Files (x86)\ in the path.

You get it from here:

You can also install LibreOffice instead of OpenOffice. LibreOffice for WIndows is 64-bit software and works well with a 64-bit Java
