How to enter data manually in a database table or form.
How to enter data manually in a database table or form.
I know how to make tables and forms and I don't know how to enter data into those forms and tables. OpenOffice help tells us how to do that and it seems it forgot to tell us how to enter data after that. I have openoffice 4.0 on Windows 7.

Hello
Your table need a primary key.
When you use an embedded database, see left down in your window of your database document then read.

I don't know what a primary key is. It looks like I am really ignorant when it comes to database language. I could use the old Dbase back in the late 80's but not this.RPG wrote:Hello

Hello
I think read this post

There you can find links for start reading. When you can start it is possible that it is more easy then the old dbase.

Re: How to enter data manually in a database table or form.
Hello
When you want make a database the first problem is always which database engine you want use. When you use OOo then you have a lot of choices. For people who are reading my posts I think the choice is easy. Choose only between a flat database engine or the HSQLDB database engine.
The flat databse engine give you access to spreadsheet tables, CSV tables or DBF tables. When you want edit yours table in combination with flat tables then use dbf tables. Using flat tables can be a good choice for people who just start with databases and have not a good idea how to design the tables. When you have a better idea of the tables you can export the data to the HSQLDB engine.
The HSQLDB databse engine is the best choice for a database.
There are several tutorials written by people who did it better as I can do. The tutorial Filter examples of Arineckaig is a good starting tutorial. He explain a lot of details of the forms. When you want make a database then you have to understand what you can do with the forms and the controls on your form.
There forms and the controls are based on your tables or queries it is also important to have a good understanding of SQL. In the beginning SQL is maybe not easy but there a lot of tutorials also easy tutorials. Reading those tutorials can be help you for working with SQL.
I did have read the tutorials and also did click a round a lot in the query desinger. Clicking a round in the query desinger can learn you a lot about the SQL. Be aware that you can do little with flat databases. When you use the HSQLDB engine you can do a lot in de query designer.
This tutorial about SQL you can download.

Re: How to enter data manually in a database table or form.
Can I come in and say I have exactly the same difficulty and I'm sorry but the original responses do not address the question. I'm sure the replies are assuming the problem is bigger than it is. To cut it down to basics. Suppose I have a single table with a primary key,'ID', and two fields 'FirstName' and 'LastName. I create a form using the wizard. I enter data for record 1 (1, John, Smith). How do I get to enter record number 2. It really cannot be that difficult.roverit wrote:I know how to make tables and forms and I don't know how to enter data into those forms and tables.
