[Solved] Databases won't run on a new iMac

Post by PhotoGuy52 »

I just migrated from an older iMac to a new 2020 iMac. My Open Office text documents and spreadsheets run just fine but I get the attached error messages when I try to open an existing database or create a new one. I have the latest version of Open Office installed and the latest version of Java installed. I found out from Apple tech support that 2020 iMacs will NOT run any 32 bit software so a legacy version of Java isn't an option.

Update: The error message I was getting is VERY confusing! Do NOT go to "Tools" in the Open Office dropdown menus like it tells you to because the solution isn't there. Go to Open Office "Preferences" and then to the "Java" line in the dropdown menu. Once I selected the installed Oracle Java software everything worked just fine.

Welcome to the Forums.
Since you have already determined that a legacy installation of Java isn't an option, my suggestion is to switch to http://www.libreoffice.org
OpenOffice 4.1.7, LibreOffice 7.0.1.2 on Windows 7 Pro, Ultimate & Windows 10 Home (2004)

Isn't the version of OpenOffice for Catalina 64 bit?

OpenOffice for Catalina is 64 bit which is why my text and spreadsheets work. The problem is with Java.

I cannot test MacOS 10.15 for you but read [Tutorial] Mac FAQ Q06/A06.
