Is there a way to write the symbols of tensorial product and direct sum in a formula without using unicode?

To my knowledge, any symbols are font dependent.
Thus it might be possible without using unicode, but it would depend on all parties that need to see the symbology having the same font.
Using unicode is the easiest way to do symbols when you don't know if all parties will have the appropriate font.

Is there a way... ...without using unicode?
Why do not you want to use Unicode character set?
