Change index spacing for italic

Post by Edulogos »

Hi

When I enter the formula E_pot there is no space between E and the subscript.

When I try to do the same in italic (ital E_pot) I end up with a lot of space between the E and the subscript.

I've used the menu (format -> spacing -> category indexes) and changed the default (20%) to everything from 0 tot 19%, but to no avail.
The spacing remains the same.

Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks

Liz

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand what you're looking for.

Despite appearances, the subscript indicator does not attach the "E" and the "pot". The parsing occurs left-to-right unless you change it by grouping with { }:

Hi

When entering E_pot (not italic) there is no space between E and the subscript.

When entering ital E_pot (or ital {E_pot} the result is the same), there is quite a bit of extra space between the E and the subscript.
I would like to get rid of that extra space.

There is no extra space between "E" and "pot".
Edit the formula, clic on the E in the math window and look :

Right of the E (at top) and left of the Pot (at bottom) are pretty align.

Unless you can overlap the 2, I can't see a solution.

For the particular function shown, you don't need a Math object, just enter it as plain text. With that, Writer will apply kerning so everything looks better.

If you have to use Math (e.g. more complex formulas), consider using Arial font instead of Arial MS Unicode. That gives a less pronounced slant, so the perceived distance is smaller.

For better results (publishing ready), I'd probably look at LaTex. I have no personal experience, but from the samples I have seen it seems to do a good job of pair kerning involving super-/subscripts.

There is a plugin for LaTex objects in OOo. Look for "OOoLaTex plugin".

Thanks, Keme.

I'll have a look at the OOoLaTex plugin.
