Equations not editable

Post by Iasonas »

I had to save my document in the Micro$oft word format and now I cannot edit the equations. Is there a remedy or do I need to rewrite some 45 long equations all over again?

Always work with your files in the native ODF fileformats, always save your important document into the native, standardized ODF formats (.odt, .ods, .odg, .odp.):
- if you want to work efficiently with Apache OpenOffice or LibreOffice.
- if you must edit the saved documents again in the future.

Maybe those Equations was saved as pictures in the foreign MS fileformat. The binary file formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt ) never was standardized, but the ODF is an International Standard.
You can EXPORT a copy into the foreign formats at the end of editing, but the MS-type copies will have not 100% compatibility.

Can you upload your example file here?

And your signature shows me a quite old version of the OpenOffice.org software:
OpenOffice.org 3.3 Mac OSX 10.6.6
You must upgrade your software, and/or update your signature.
The latest version of the Apache OpenOffice is AOO 4.1.1,
the latest "Still" version of the LibreOffice is LO 4.4.5
and the "Fresh" version of the LibreOffice is LO 5.0.2

Just a tip:
The LibreOffice have more compatibility with the MS fileformats, but it never will 100% of compatibility.

Please, edit the initial post in the topic: add the word [Solved] at the beginning of the subject line - if your problem has been solved.

You can try this:
  • Menu selection Tools - Options
  • Select tree/branch Load/Save - Microsoft Office
  • Tick both boxes in the upper row, concerning conversion between OOo Math and MathType.
  • OK
Now try to open your document and see whether the formulas are editable again. (Probably not :-( but worth a try.)

Like Zizi64 suggested, if "convert before save" was not enabled when the file was saved, the formula may have been saved as a graphic, so in practice it is not editable.
Apache OO 4.1.12 and LibreOffice 7.5, mostly on Ms Windows 10

Thank y'all very much for your responses. Zizi64, I decided to stick to the version I have because when I upgraded I lost all the entries in my custom classical greek dictionary. It is not worth the trouble to upgrade and lose all that. Thank you for pointing it out though.

Your custom dictionary should still be intact. Upgrading should not remove such user data but it may not always properly carry over to the updated version. The dictionary should still be there, in the old OO settings profile; if you copy it over to the new profile, then OO should be able to use it.

Unfortunately, I do not know the details to tell you how to do it. If no one posts here with a suggestion, try a search or submit a new post asking how to recover a custom dictionary.
