How to write formulas?

I have been using open office 3.1 for over a year now with my schooling...However, I have just started Algebra and I cannot figure out how to write formulas or if I can download a math program through open office.....Please help me

From the Quick Starter select Formula, or from an open document File> New> Formula .
OpenOffice.org v3.3, LibO v3.32 on Ubuntu 10.10 and Win7

I understand that part but am having problems actually writing out formulas....is there any way to figure out how to pull up formatting or symbols to help

Menu View>Elements.

Please add '[Solved]' at the beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.
