[Solved] Problem with derivatives

Post by Agilar »

Hi
I've a problem with creating a derivative sign ' with an indexed variable
At present I do it as
x_1^{bold ,} - but this doesn't look too good. Perhaps smb has a better idea?

Actually I use oo.org 3.2 at Win7 and openSUSE, both with dmath - but there wasn't such option.

You can try:

x_1^{size 12 ,}

...or lager/smaller size of "," character

Best I've been able to do

Code: Select all

{}rsup size 30 x {} rsup size 20 ' csub size 10 1
The sizes are, um, negotiable.

Thanks Zizi64 - but the main problem is how to get rid of comma. Actually I tried to use "l" in Arial: x_1^l or x_1^"ll". But I'm not satisfied with this.

Thanks Charlie Young - your solution looks great. It's kind of hard to use with the 10-th font size. But still... I don't even knew of the "sub" commands.

There is also another problem I'm having. Now with limits after integration of "large" expressions. It seems to me that "left none {a over b} mline_1^2" has to work somehow. But in expressions it doesn't. What I'm doing in this case is simply using square bracket "left none {a over b} right ]_1^2" - the method I saw in use in one book. But there definetly has to be a way to use mline.

Did you try something like left none {a over b}` right rline_1^2?

You might find the OOo Math Guide helpful; it includes a reference section: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wik ... ser_Guides

Here's another one. My last one had the x itself as a superscript, which would probably cause problems in some contexts. This eliminates that, though I wish I could find a way to get the subscript and the prime closer to the variable.

Code: Select all

size 30 x {size 30 acute size 20 {} sub size 10 1}
Again, the sizes can be proportioned as desired.

On OpenSymbol font, near the Greek characters, you have a "big prime" character that can be used to build the derivative: you just need to add the character as described here:
[TIP]Adding new symbols to Math
and then, if you called the symbol "bprime" type:
x_i ^{%bprime}
to obtain obtain something like this:
