CorelDraw to OOo Draw

Post by Gary Smith »

I'm exporting files from CorelDraw to CGM format for import into OO so that a maximum number of users get my files.

I'm trying to get out of the OO Draw application what's possible in my CorelDraw.

Here is what I'm trying to achieve on this forum page. My forum and graphics: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RoundTableArms/

Re: CorelDraw to OODraw

A little sketchy but I wrote that very early this A.M.

My CGM exports are that lines make the export but need regrouped again in OO. Probably same of any software application on importing the CGM. CGM export format may be my best export option but there may be another that allows for Draw edit features. Anyone?

Is anyone able to manipulate Gradients? My CorelDraw gradients will import into OO Draw but have a louvered effect. I can live with that and this is probably true of any software importing CGMs also. I'm looking to master the Gradient commands for multiple shading. Anyone working on that one?

If you don't need to edit your finished Corel work, you might try exporting it as bitmap files. Also, the same goes for your gradients. Remember that the proof of any pudding is in the eating; if you wish printed output, then what it looks like onscreen is not terribly imprtant - it may step on screen, but be smooth when printed.

RoryOF,

My mission is to move from CorelDraw to OODraw or at least find it usable as a follow-up editing software.

I compare a Draw program to brushes, canvas and oil. The output product with export from the Draw program is a bitmap such formats: BMP, JPEG, GIF, etc. So, backing up a little. One needs an output for a line and node "canvas and oil" file prior to reaching the bitmap. This seems to be the OODraw effort.

The only Draw kind of export seems to be the CGM that I've been able to work on reimporting and using just as one would an originally created OODraw file. That's where we're at so far.

Kinds of graphic format can be confusing even to many that use them from time to time. They have been for me too.

Thanks for posting and I'm sure more will chime in as this spends time open in the forum.

Teach Yourself CorelDRAW 8 in 24 Hours

This immediate quote is from the article below (not included) and tells that an EPS file format exported to it does not allow for re-edits when imported again. I need to check out how the CGM files take formatting as I had planned to begin mass exporting to that format today.

CGM may be the best option for importing but the below quote says I may need to copy the file from CorelDraw to the newer (or different) software application. In this case OO.

This is where I'm at so far...

Gary

Excerpt: "Just A Minute: CorelDRAW can open EPS files, but you will find that the objects in them do not edit well; many effects cannot be applied to objects in these imported files. EPS is not a good format to use for files that you intend to edit. If you save a file as an EPS file for a printer, save the drawing as a CorelDRAW file as well."

If you plan to use CorelDRAW objects in a web page, a Word document, a PageMaker publication, or a PowerPoint slide show, for example, you need to export them to a file format other than CorelDRAW (.cdr). Try opening a CorelDRAW file in PowerPoint, for example, and you see a disappointing dialog box such as the one in Figure 17.1.

It hasn't always been easy to move CorelDRAW's vector-based images into desktop publishing, or bitmap graphic or word processing programs. But that was then; this is now. In most cases, transferring graphic images between CorelDRAW 8 and other programs is a smooth process. Usually you can handle the process by copying objects from CorelDRAW into other applications and choosing from various Paste options in the target application.

Moving objects from other programs into CorelDRAW is a bit different. Copied bitmap images enter CorelDRAW as bitmap images, not as vector-based objects. But when you get those bitmap images into CorelDRAW, you can edit them just like you would any other bitmap object in CorelDRAW. You explored that process in Hour

Have a quick look at Inkscape. Reports are that it offers more Corel-like functionality than OpenOffice Draw, though not as much as Corel itself.

RoryOF,

Thanks for the tip concerning InkScape. Will have a look into that.

I've been experimenting with CDR export to some other file formats and not going as desired.

Will update later.

I keep an old machine (Win2K, 4GB) to run CorelDraw and other legacy programs. It has no trade-in value, so it just takes up a little space. When I switch it online I use a KVM switch so that it uses my normal monitor, keyboard, and mouse used by one of my Ubuntu machines.
