Transparent background

Post by OOO1 »

Using Drawing I am having a hard time removing background from a *.png file and replacing it with transparent.
When I uploaded same image to a background transparent site it took 4 seconds if that to see background gone and replaced by transparent.
Thing is to download image I had to sign in and allow access to all my files, photos and whatever.
Is there someway to remove background of a *.png image using OpenOfice 4.1.10 without everyone on this forum or everyplace else from seeing image. And no it is not porn.
Online image I sent was transformed as I wanted in like 4 seconds and would be nice if a suggested method will not require me to trace around image I want to retain.
Thanks.

The Apache OpenOffice Draw is not a pixel graphic editor. You can use free, third party softwares to manage, manipulate, edit, and convert the pixel graphic images. Try the free IrfanView software. You can set the transparent color of a PNG file, when you save a picture with it.

How do you proceed?
First, provide a picture and a step-by-step to reproduce.

Thanks for reply. I never heard term or to ask if background remover had Pixel Graphic Editor. Since OO does not have it is same for Gimp and Faststone?
I will try infanview and let you know.

Use IrfanView. File > Save as > choose PNG and tick Transparency.

This is the AOO logo above with the light blue background colour set to transparent. If you want the edges cleaned up you need to set the requisite range of colours to just one colour, and set that one colour to transparent

AOO has limited pixel editing capability.

If you go View > Toolbars > Picture ..., to bring up the Picture Toolbar, you can use it to adjust the transparency of an entire selected image as in this example, where the entire image is set to 50%.

For some specific purposes you surely can use the built-in Color Replacer (Tools menu).
It can replace any single color of an image, the percentage widens the range of similar colors. It can be applied for more than one time.
See attached screenshot.
The text of the left upper corner cannot be removed. Use for these tasks GIMP or another image processing program...

This is all getting very confusing.
I downloaded Infanview and followed instructions but perhaps problem is with image. Background of my image is not same as this box meaning all white.
My image has tiny tiny shadows caused by lighting when I took image.
On line using photoshop those shadows were gone except I did not want to sign in to download it.
I attached image. If you have a solution I can go back to using OO to make backgrounds transparent.
I would like to see ruler and dispenser.
Also maybe light bulb I used is reason. It is a MaxLED 12w 120V. I am going to try again using a Cree 60W LED daylight 5000K
And Thanks
Image was too large

I think, there is not any pixel with white (hex: FFFFFF) color in your sample image.
The irfanView can mark ONE color for the transparent background, but not the similar pale of shades.
You must use a more intelligent software for this task: for example the free Gimp.

IrfanView > Image > Replace colour ..., allows you to specify a tolerance for the selected colour but it changes the colour everywhere it finds the selected colours in the image.

IrfanView > F12 for Paint > Colour fill ..., allows you to specify a tolerance. Colour fill then changes all colours within the tolerance that are contiguous (ie joined together). Several choices of area may need to be made to do the entire image.

In my second image I used F12 > Pen ..., to draw the red. I should have continued by using F12 > Colour fill ..., and specifying the tolerance to change all the red edge artefacts to one colour, then made that colour transparent. This would remove the edge artefacts.

As I said

light bulbs i've used

1 - Maxled Maxlite lumens 1100 4100K 12W 120V - 60 HZ
2 - Cree - Lumens 815 5000K 10 W 120V - 60 HZ
3 - Duracell lumens 1050 5000K 12W 120V - 60 HZ

I had used #1 so now I switched to #3. Went back to OO and did not work and same with Infanview.
By did not work I mean it was not instant or within 5 seconds to get a translucent background.
I understand what you say about background being a kind of foggy white.
I tried with a green background but it shows through clear glass. Was thinking to put some white paper behind glass.
There has to be another way.
Thanks

I looked again.
Going to try a small piece of white paper behind glass and with ruler and glass in front of green paper and maybe just maybe green will be gone assuming there are not different shades of green like there was with white.
Will let you know.

That's when to use Colour fill contiguous areas rather than Replace colour wherever it appears.

1. Do the two stage process with IrfanView. Use as many pixels as possible while editing to replacing colour then resample to fewer pixels - it makes the errors smaller.

2. Use GIMP. Google for how to do it. How to remove the Background from a Photo using GIMP

3. You can make backgrounds transparent on-line - Google make photo background transparent.

4. Use a curved sheet photographer's backdrop. Use a colour which contrasts strongly with the foreground object - eg blue in your photo. White is useless as it is too close to the plastic colour. Prevent shadows being cast by illuminating the backdrop with a diffuse light source.

Doing what I want to do might be easy for those who have replied to my posts but for me playing around with colors and backgrounds is a pain.
I don't do this every day nor do I have plans for doing it every day.
It is like buying supreme Costco gas I don't like paying 4.23 cents a gallon but it saves me having to walk from here to there and back.
I will search for some site that charges per image and have what I want done in 5 seconds using software they have and I do not.
It has been fun and I appreciate help from everyone but this is not for me.
One can only wonder if this pandemic has caused internet prices to increase just an to make an image background transparent.
Thanks to you all.

Doing some searches found remove.bg cost per image is nearly 1 Dollar with a choice of HD or not meaning it is worth it to have it done in less than 5 seconds.
I have not signed up yet but if anyone has something to say negative about remove.bg let me know.

Practical use perspective:
Trustpilot has positive and negative feedback.

Security perspective:

If an external service requires that level of access to do that, it is a big NO from me. If you must use it, make sure you have proper backups.

I doubt that.
