Thanks, very interesting!

I wonder about direct formatting (I've not read the document in detail so I may have skipped it). Is there a difference in rendering or robustness (during translation) if the formatting is applied by direct formatting or through styles? And would styles from a format be converted in direct formatting by the applications?

The white paper compares the two file formats in respect to their translatability. It is not about OOo and MS Office. The tabular comparison starts at page 63, chapter 5.
For instance: Can both formats store information about bold fonts in a way that some application has a chance to translate the information about bold text? Answer:
Functionality: Bold text (font weight)
OOXML: Yes (17.3.2.1)
ODF: Yes (14.6.3)
Translatability: Medium
Comment: In addition to bold, ODF allows font weight to be specified numerically (100-900).

Yes, I've seen but the basic question of users is: what about the formatting of my documents with round trips between different applications? So OK, that's the technical answer about features compatibility but it doesn't say how good the applications will do the job. Even if features are fully compatible, perhaps a glitch in the code (import/export filter) will result in a poor result.

But OK, that was a first step. That's a good piece of information to check what features have to be avoided in case of mixed environment.

Note that I respect the huge work that has been done here, comparing the 2 formats and the so many pages of specification!

It is good source for understand why OOXML filter can not be perfect in OOo, it will work badly in some cases, and some features might not be converted between two format, in one or other good way.

Looks like they're here (updated, maybe?):

PS: Oops, too slow.
