Upgrade signature pattern?

Post by Jan_J »

Hi,
please consider to upgrade regexp that user's sigantures need to be matched to.
I have obtained an user's complain http://forum.openoffice.org/pl/forum/vi ... 7096#p7096. In fact, signature text "LibreOffice 4.0 na Windows 7 Home Premium" is rejected by the registration engine. Change 4 → 3 allows for registration. There is LibreOffice 4.0 and there's no need to wait until AOO 4.0 is released. People in Poland use LO more intensively than AOO, and our preamble does not exclude users because they use any OO.org derivative other than Apache.

LO (7.6) ∙ Python (3.11|3.10) ∙ Unicode 15 ∙ LᴬTEX 2ε ∙ XML ∙ Unix tools ∙ Linux (Rocky|CentOS)

This post makes a good point. Is this something imacat would have to do? Are there any objections to doing it?

I've PMed her this topic when it has been posted.
Of course, we should fix it.

I tried to go back and find out what the actual requirement is but had no luck.

I can't imagine why there was any specific version number check--I don't understand what that would accomplish.

The other side of this is, of course, that the registration info isn't critical to be correct, since it can be changed after the registration is complete. Not nice if users have to do that, but not difficult either.

This came from this topic: Captcha (archives in the private section).
The version number was a good strategy to defeat the bots. I agree with that (many spammers copy and paste the full example line, which is nonsense).

So I'm in favor of keeping the current system and update the versions available for registration.

Ahh, right. Thanks for looking that up.

What would be the problem with accepting anything other than the verbatim example signature? I still don't see any advantage in looking for a certain version number, or range of versions. If we want to encourage people to include the version information, then just look for any digit and be done with it.

I'm all for having the user enter something as a Turing test, but trying to also extract or enforce correct system/version info seems pointless to me.

Since there was almost no issue with that, I suppose we let it live as it is.
We should take the verbatim line as a correct one, it helps to spot the spammers!

As for validating digits, that may be a good solution indeed.

Not having registered in a very long time I cannot say about the registration process; however, one can subsequently edit one's .sig to almost anything one likes.

I know it but very frustrating for new users.
Especially as the forum mentions LibreOffice in the banner.

Why you don't fix it?

As far as I know none of the Administrators or Moderators have access to the underlying php code, nor, I surmise, experience with that even if they had the access.

Indeed. I've just sent a mail on the dev mailing list to ask for help.
