Online Users

Post by RoryOF »

For about 18 months the maximum users at any one time has stood at 186. Suddenly (20101008) it has jumped
"Most users ever online was 357 on 08 Oct 2010 23:47"

I wonder why?

A bug I think or rather a problem with connection and a bunch of requests being paused and coming at the same time after being "released". Even the 186 figure was wrong and occurred a short while after the outage issues we have had several months ago (there is a topic for that in this section IIRC).

The real maximum number of users online I've seen is around 110.

Thanks, Hagar. Nice to know computers can still foul things up! Largest number I've ever seen online is about 110 also; I was wondering if I had missed something when I saw the 357 figure.

Looking at third party analytics services the forum experienced a sizable spike in traffic right after the 3.2 release, it was brief but may account for that figure, perhaps.

I've noticed that frequently there are over 100 users online. Numbers are coming up.

It means that the forum is a good knowledge base.
Users don't have to register if they find their answering with a mere internet search.

It took some time (more than a year) but it seems that we are reaching again the good level of visitors we had just after the code was given to Apache (more than 150 users and nearly 200):

The last number was 404 during a couple of years IIRC. Now almost 500, in the middle of the summer...

A new record, rather weird for a Jan. 2nd.
It was before the server transfer so it can't be linked with that.

On the same day, a new record was also recorded on the Italian forum. I believe it is not possible. Is there something that does not work?

From memory, the most I have ever seen actually flagged as online is about 300. I've had a quick look at some phpBB forums and find nothing about spurious users.

I thought about some glitch network POV that would queue connection attempts for a very short while and release them at once, creating a massive flow within a small time range.
Have not noticed any significant operation on the dev mailing list that could explain that (and it was before the server change).

We can reset that figure on the index page and see how it evolves, agreed?
I also think that this 700+ figures is not true.
