[Solved] What data does LibreOffice collect from user?

Post by Resmarohs »

I really like this software and have been using it for years. And I doubt I would ever change it, but now I have this half-curious half-confused question.

I had issue with my Mac that resulted in forced shut down. After restarting, I got window due to LibreOffice still remembering last session. I was rather surprised of why does LibreOffice know my IP address. (The topic itself is here, but the question in there itself is solved)
https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question ... ird-party/

So if someone can help me with my question: what kind of personal data does LibreOffice collect? If it knows my IP address. Is the text and other data inside documents private or is that also considered under LibreOffice's interest?

This is the only one I'm aware of:
menu:Tools>Options>LibreOffice>General
[X] Collect usage data
As far as I know, it sends information about which components and commands are used how often without sending personal data.

Hello and thank your answer!

Hm... could it be Libre Office software in my Mac knows my IP for some reason, but doesn't send it to company?
By commands, You mean "copy, paste, cut" but not what exactly is typed or copy-pasted?

As to the IP address, I'd guess that is stored in the user .lock file.

@Villaroy can you confirm this as you have LO? I know that AOO doesn't store IP in the user .lock file; this is the content of mine.

Code: Select all

[Lockdata]
User=huntsman
Host=studio.home.net
Stamp=B0615AA2252EDCB615F96FDDAEC673C4
Time=Fri Dec  2 21:49:55 2016
IPCServer=true

The host name is the network name within our own local network.
The stamp is another hex number every time I start the office.
For IPC see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inter-pro ... munication

Same info as in .openoffice/4/.lock

Thank you for the help!

Looking at the message I got during the Mac error that I discovered it, Libreoffice said "LibreOffice on host [ip adress and my ISP provider]
IP address and provider name changed: (56765355673.cable.ISPname.com)
So it knows host and in this case, host name is my ip address combined with my ISP provider? That's possible?

I have this in my Mac's .lock file. I use a router. The host name is taken from my Computer Name setting on the  → System Preferences → Sharing panel. There is no IP address in the file nor is the Internet Service Provider's name used.

That's a rather strange date layout.

Thanks guys! Guess it's just software being bit strange in how it names things. I'll stop worrying about it. :D
