LO 7 Crashes When I Try to Open a Version 6.4 File

Post by skuddle »

I'm having trouble using LO 7.0.3 to open my LibreOffice files that I created using LO 6.4.2. The earlier files were created by opening CorelDraw 12 in LO and saving them in an LO format

For example, if I try to open "File 1.odt", LO opens with its usual startup screen, then the screen goes blank, sometimes with the tip of the day in them, then LO quits unceremoniously.

When I look at my filelist using Explorer, I see, ".lock File 1.odt# "

If I delete the .odt# file and try to open different LO file I am told that "LibreOffice will attempt to recover the state of the files...before it crashed" and am shown the filename (File 1) with a status of "Not recovered yet".

When I click the Start button, I'm told that the "Recovery of your documents was finished. Click 'Finish'...".

When I click Finish, a new window opens with nothing but a blank Title bar. A few seconds later the window closes.

I "repaired" LO using the Windows Control Panel but I still get the same results. What can I do?

To get rid of the recovery dialog, you can cancel the recovery.
For the file itself, can you upload it somewhere so that we have a look?
Embedded objects may confuse LO. What kind of file was it (the CorelDraw part)?

Thank you for your help. I have some more information about my problem that I forgot to include...

1. I erroneously reported the problem files as being ODT files when I should have written ODG files. My bad!

2. I opened those files not by first starting LO but by double-clicking them in an Explorer window.

This morning I tried to open the two ODG files, and I had the same problem as I previously described, so I deleted the resulting files (.lock File 1.odg#), started LO, and successfully opened them from within the program.

Then I closed LO and tried to open some other ODG files from the Explorer window and did so successfully.

So it appears there is a problem with the two files that wouldn't open and I have attached them to this message.

2001_anniversary.odg opens OK for me, but birthday_card_2002.odg crashes. Note: I am using OpenOffice, not LibreOffice.

By the way for a French fold card you need to invert your internal text (in top left quadrant)

birthday card 2002.odg opens OK for me with AOO 4.1.8 and LO 6.4.4.2 on Windows 10.

Do a test. Boot the PC in Safe Mode (Google how) and try again. Is it now OK?

BTW. A .lock File 1.odt# lying around when AOO/LO is closed means AOO or LO previously did not close properly while File 1.odt was open for editing. Delete all such lock files you find.
LO 6.4.4.2, Windows 10 Home 64 bit

See the Writer Guide, the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials and Writer for students.

Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.

birthday card 2002.odg opens but then it eats all the CPU. The LO (7.0.3) window is hardly responsive.
I tried to delete the styles.xml in the file and it's better, see attachment (resaved with a brand new styles.xml version). Have not investigated its content.

I was able to open both files using LO 7.0.4.2 on Ubuntu Mate. However, both documents have only one page with overlapping text. It looks like each document should have two pages.

According to the meta.xml files for the documents, 'birthday card 2002.odg' was created using LO 5.2.5.1 and '2001 anniversary.odg' was created using LO 6.1.2.1.
