I recieved a powerpoint presentation but I would like to have it presented with impress instead, when I "open with" it normally opens but there are several slides that look crushed and my guess is that its powerpoint layouts(?) I try to attach a picture of what I see when I open it with impress, is there any way to fix this or I need to re-make all the slides?

OpenOffice is not a clone of MS Office, so formatting differences are to be expected in files between the two platforms. Try using the free online conversion utility at

to convert the .ppt file to .odp. You may still have to do a little reformatting, but hopefully not as much as with the conversion you show,

Looking at your screenshot, I think the problem is that the images are linked into the presentation, not embedded; as a result they are not being found and a placeholder is displayed in their place.
Edit: Or possibly the internal links to the illustratuions have been lost, which sometimes happens.

OpenOffice 3.1 on Windows sVista
OpenOffice 3.1 is a very-very old version. Upgrade to a recent version of the LibreOffice or Apache OpenOffice.
The LO has a littlebit higher compatibility with the foreign, old, obsolete never standardized file formats like the binary MS .ppt.
But you must use the international standard ODF file formats if you want work efficiently with the AOO or LO.
